Kingdom Hearts Will Magic its Way Onto the Nintendo Switch Next Month

Kingdom Hearts Switch

Kingdom Hearts is arriving on Nintendo Switch this February… or is it?

Yes, yes it is – we wouldn’t make things up, even on the slowest news day. But there’s a question mark over whether it’s really “on” the Switch since, unlike Kingdom Hearts’ other console incarnations, the Switch versions will be cloud only.

What this means, apart from the fact that we’re going to recycle our Final Fantasy VII joke, is that the games are streamed to your console. Why? It’s not that the Switch couldn’t run the earlier Kingdom Hearts games but, as reported by Nintendo Life, it’s down to the Switch’s smaller storage size.

Because, come this February, you’re not just getting one Kingdom Hearts game, you’re getting more-or-less the entire series. We first got wind of this impending release in October but it’s only now that Square Enix have confirmed the February 10th release date. The RPG series, which blends Disney characters with other Square Enix properties, first started life on the PlayStation 2 and, for its Switch release, is being bundled into three collections.

The collections are: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX Cloud Version: KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version and Kingdom Hearts + Re Mind (DLC) Cloud Version.

You can find a full list of titles contained in each collection here, with names like Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- , and don’t get us started on the story. We had fun with Kingdom Hearts 3, but its plot has become so convoluted it’ll leave a lot of players scratching their heads.

Since these are the cloud versions, you’ll need a decent internet connection to play them, so don’t count on being able to tackle them on the go. You can download demos of all three bundles (which are themselves available as a single bundle) to see if you’re going to have any cloud strife.

Yes, we’ve used that joke before but no, we have no shame. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX Cloud Version: KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version and Kingdom Hearts + Re Mind (DLC) Cloud Version will be available this February 10th. They’re priced at $39.99, $49.99 and $49.99 respectively, or you can get all three for $89.99, though if you pre-order them from the eShop they’re available at a discount.
