With a whole year stretching out in front of us, we can’t help but think about all the best new games to come in 2022.

It’s set to be a great year. With games like Horizon Forbidden West and Dying Light 2 delayed from last year, there are a lot of huge releases on the horizon. So many, in fact, that narrowing down this list has been hard. We’ve picked out 12 of our most anticipated games, but there are way more than that. Ghostwire TokyoThe Callisto ProtocolStarfieldTest Drive Unlimited Solar CrownPokémon Legends: Arceus… that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the best games set to release in 2022.

Of course, we’ll be featuring all of those games in due course. But for now, here are the 12 games that we’re most excited to play in 2022.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Dying Light 2

  • Release date: 4th February
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch (via Cloud), PC

Although it has suffered a number of delays, Dying Light 2 is finally just a few weeks away, releasing in February. It’s been seven years since Dying Light released, and its sequel picks up some time after. It’s now 20 years since the deadly virus first took hold of the city of Harran, and its people are still fighting every day to survive. Somehow, it’s down to you to change the fate of Harran and its people – but it’s not going to be easy.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human promises a huge, open world to explore. By day, it’s fairly safe. But at night, without the sunlight to keep them at bay, the monsters and infected come out in droves, threatening anyone who dares be awake. But with epic combat skills at your disposal, which you’ll improve as you play, you have the power to face them. It’s been a long time coming, but Dying Light 2 promises to be one of the best games of 2022 – hopefully.

Players can expect to meet new mechanical beasts for Aloy to take down, with new, beautiful environments to explore.

There’ll be new factions for her to meet too, and new friendships to be forged. If its predecessor is anything to go by, then Horizon Forbidden West is going to be one heck of an open world adventure, and we can’t wait to jump in it. With just over a month to go, now’s the perfect time to replay Horizon Zero Dawn – or jump in for the first time if you’re yet to play.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring

  • Release date: 25th February
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Are you a fan of Dark Souls? Then you’re going to want to keep Elden Ring firmly in your sights. The latest game from FromSoftware has been created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin – yes, that George R. R. Martin, the one who wrote A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones). Needless to say, players can expect an epic fantasy packed full of tense battles, gorgeous landscapes and a mystical narrative.

We previewed Elden Ring last year, and needless to say we were enamoured with what we played. Here’s what we had to say: “We expected Elden Ring to be good, but not this good. It’s captivating from the get-go, immersing you in a world that feels dangerous yet rewarding to explore. This may be an open world game, but it doesn’t bog you down with millions of icons on a map, all vying for your attention. Instead it feels natural, letting you enjoy it at your own pace without being pressured to tick off objectives.”

GRID Legends

GRID Legends

  • Release date: 24th February
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

It wasn’t until we got our hands on GRID Legends for a preview last month that we realised how much of a treat it’s set to be. Coming just before Gran Turismo 7 arrives in March, the first quarter of 2022 is shaping up to be a very good one for fans of racing games. Packed with features, GRID Legends should not be ignored if you’re a fan of arcade racing.

A story mode called Driven to Glory makes up the backbone of GRID Legends, allowing players to play out the dramatic story of an up-and-coming driver. Impressive technology has been used to create story scenes, putting players right at the heart of the action. Alongside it is a fully-featured career mode with over 250 events, and you can even create your own events if you simply want to jump into a quick race. It looks fantastic, has an excellent selection of cars and real-world tracks, and we can’t wait to play more.

Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7 (1)

Release date: 4th March
Format: PS4, PS5

A mainline entry into the Gran Turismo series has been a long time coming. After all, Gran Turismo 6 came out on PS3 way back in 2013 – almost nine years ago. Of course, we had Gran Turismo Sport last generation, but that was never intended to be a replacement for the main series. And so, it goes without saying that we’re excited for the release of Gran Turismo 7. Finally.

Made to take advantage of the power of the PS5, we know that Gran Turismo 7 is going to look gorgeous. It’s set to bring together the best features from the series, with game modes including GT Campaign, Arcade and Driving School. So whether you’re already a pro racing sim player or a casual racer, you’ll find something to enjoy. Oh, and let’s not forget the staggering number of cars set to feature in the game: over 420. Phew. For racing game fans, then, Gran Turismo 7 is set to be one of the best games of 2022.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

  • Release date: 25th March
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Are you ready to jump back into the Borderlands? Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands isn’t quite the same as the games that came before it, but it very much shares the DNA of Gearbox’s long-running Borderlands series. This time, it focuses around Tiny Tina, everyone’s favourite little lunatic, as she brings to life a high fantasy tale about a quest to stop the evil Dragon Lord.

If you played Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure, you’ll know what to expect. Released late last year, it was a standalone re-release of a piece of Borderlands 2 DLC. It played just like Borderlands 2, but the narrative was set around a role-playing game dictated by Tiny Tina. We expect the same level of hilarity and ridiculousness from Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. If you like zany action and senseless good fun, this promises to be one of the best games of 2022.

Forspoken

Forspoken

  • Release date: 24th May
  • Available on: PS5, PC

Coming from Square Enix, Forspoken is a brand new IP that caught our attention when it was first revealed last year. Originally announced as ‘Project Athia’, Forspoken tells the story of Frey, a young woman from New York who finds herself transported to the mythical land of Athia. Filled with monstrous creatures and dark magic, Athia is a long way from Frey’s home – but she’s going to have to overcome the challenges of her new surroundings if she ever wants to get back to the real world.

Frey isn’t empty-handed, however. She’s got a newfound wealth of magical skills at her disposal, which will come in handy for when she’s combatting the dark and terrifying monsters that plague Athia. We’re already intrigued by its story, and can’t wait to see how Forspoken plays out when it releases later this year.

Saints Row

Saints Row

  • Release date: 23rd August
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Originally set to release in February, Saints Row has been pushed back until later in the year. We’ll now have to wait until August to get our hands on the reboot of the Saints Row franchise, but hopefully it’ll be worth the wait. We got an exclusive hands-off preview of the game last year, showcasing its new characters, new setting, and mixture of new and familiar gameplay and missions to undertake. Needless to say, for fans of open world adventure games, Saints Row is a game to watch out for in 2022.

Johnny Gat is no more, and a new band of Saints take the stage in this all-new entry. It’s set in the southwestern US city of Santo Ileso, a place split up into multiple distinctive zones. There’s the bustling city, with its Vegas-like feel, surrounded by the starkness of the desert. It’s a huge world, and we can’t wait to wreak havoc in it.

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok

  • Release date: TBA
  • Available on: PS4, PS5

We don’t have a release date yet for God of War Ragnarok but we’ll almost certainly see it release by the end of 2022. And this is one sequel we are very excited for. God of War remains one of PlayStation’s best exclusive games, and the continuation of its story is set to be just as good, if not better.

It’ll follow Kratos and his son Atreus – aka BOY – a few years after the event of the first game. A long, cold winter has arrived in the lands of Midgard, making the pair’s survival in the Norse wilderness harder than ever before. The new weather brings new challenges for players, with icy obstacles to overcome, new wintry beasts, and a whole new world to explore. We still have a lot more to learn about God of War Ragnarok before its release, and we can’t wait.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

  • Release date: TBA
  • Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Remember the Batman: Arkham series? Of course you do. It was developed by Rocksteady, and remains one of the best superhero video game series we’ve had to date. Well, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is made by the same team. But instead of playing as Batman, you’re instead on the other side of the law. You’ll take control of the Justice League – that means Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark – on a mission to take down the Justice League. Sorry good guys, we’re coming for you.

Suicide Squad is a third-person action adventure game, just like the Batman: Arkham series. So you can expect the same level of adventure, exploration, and exciting combat, coupled with fantastic storytelling. We don’t have a solid release date for this one just yet, but it’s one of our most anticipated titles of 2022.

Stray

Stray

  • Release date: TBA
  • Available on: PS4, PS5, PC

A game where you play as a stray cat? Count us in! We don’t even need to know more. We’re already sold. But after seeing Stray‘s announcement trailer, we were even more convinced that this is set to be one of the most endearing and intriguing games of 2022. Not only do you play as a stray cat, but you’re also part of a futuristic, cyberpunk world inhabited by robots.

After being separated from your family, your goal is to find your way home. But that’s easier said than done when surrounded by the threats brought about by a big cybercity. It’s no place for a stray cat to be wandering alone, with droids and dangerous creatures lurking around every corner. Not all robots are bad, however, and you’ll soon gain the assistance of a friendly droid known as B12 to help you along on your way. The Adventures of Cat and Robot; what could be better than that?

A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale: Requiem

  • Release date: TBA
  • Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch (via Cloud), PC

We absolutely adored A Plague Tale: Innocence when it released in 2019. It told the story of Amicia and her young brother Hugo, trying to survive in a plague-infested France in the middle ages. Hugo is no ordinary boy, however; he has extraordinary powers which allow him to control the rats that infest the country. A handy skill to have, it has to be said – but one that has landed him and his sister in hot water. He’s a very wanted young boy, as it turns out.

A Plague Tale: Requiem picks up where its predecessor left off. Amicia and Hugo have escaped their homeland, but in the new environments they find themselves in, they’re set to face more problems and obstacles. We’re still waiting for a firm release date for Requiem, but we’re very excited to see more of the game. If the first in the series was anything to go by, we can expect this to be a heart-pounding, exhilarating adventure with a heart-wrenching narrative at its core.
