Monster Energy Supercross 5’s first gameplay trailer is here but we can’t help but feel it’s missing something.
We got wind of this upcoming bike-em-up, the work of developer Milestone, in November of last year but this is the first time we’ve seen it in action, and it’s suitably convincing. No, you can’t punch people off their bikes, but we felt our stomachs leap whenever a rider leapt over a hill.
That said, we reviewed Monster Energy Supercross 4 last year and found that it was a step down from the previous year’s entry. We concluded that there were “..issues with the difficulty, AI and physics” which sucked a great deal of the fun out of it. We have our fingers crossed that Monster Energy Supercross 5 is a return to form, because we’re suckers for a good motorbike game. Milestone promises that bike handling has been improved and that it’ll be a better experience all-round.
However, that’s not what’s missing from the trailer. No, what’s missing, given that Monster Energy sponsor the event, is actual Monster Energy-related content. Mad Max got a special Monster Energy buggy, so why not go even further in with Monster Energy Supercross 5? We’d love to see some kind of special event where your race round the course, earning points by grabbing cans and swigging them as you go.
However, the more caffeine you consume, the more wired you become, to the point where the screen and controller are constantly vibrating and you’re in danger of losing control of your bike. How’s that for dynamic difficulty? If you’re reading this, Milestone and Monster, you can send us a cheque.
Monster Energy Supercross 5 or, to give it its full title, Monster Energy Supercross 5 – The Official Videogame 5, will be available worldwide on March 17, 2022. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
