Road 96, which made its debut on PC, promises to be a wild, wild ride when it arrives on Xbox and PlayStation this April.
It sees you taking a road trip to.. well, anywhere that’s not Petria. Your “home” country is ruled by a corrupt President and the trip is your attempt to escape the tyrant and his regime. But things are never that simple and as you flee, both by road and on foot, you’ll encounter all manner of weird, wonderful and potentially life-threatening situations.
In theory, as each trip in Road 96 is procedurally generated it should never the same game twice. In practice, you’re likely to encounter some of the same scenes, just in a different order, but developer Digixart promise up to a thousand “routes”, which should be enough uncertainty to keep you on your toes. It’s been very well received on PC and no doubt Digixart and publisher Merge Games are hoping it’ll find favour with console players.
Digixart is certainly no stranger to making emotionally engaging games. Studio head Yoan Fanise helped create 11-11 Memories Retold and Valiant Hearts, both about the First World War. In our review we called the former “compassionate, believable, beautiful and touching” and we were impressed enough by Valiant Hearts for it to make our list of 10 Games Set in the Past That are Totally Worth Your Time.
So, we have our fingers crossed that Road 96 will deliver when it drives onto consoles. It’ll arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S this April 14th.
