The Batman is one of the world’s favourite superheroes. And so of course there are plenty of video games in which you can play as him.

Just a simple human turned vigilante, emboldened by vast wealth and access to cutting-edge technology, The Batman is different to most other superheroes out there. He’s not got super-human powers, and he’s not from a distant planet far, far away. Instead, he’s just got a strong sense of justice and bucket loads of determination. If you want to take control of him in the world of video games, what are your best options?

There have been many games featuring The Batman over the years. Most of them aren’t much fun to play now. Batman: Arkham Knight

batman arkham knight review

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Rocksteady’s Arkham series has perhaps provided us with the best Batman games ever, and it culminated in the greatness that is Batman: Arkham Knight. Developed for PS4 and Xbox One, this is the most technically advanced game in the trilogy, with visuals that still look sumptuous to this day. And thanks to backwards compatibility you can play it on Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles, too.

Batman: Arkham Knight truly allows you to be The Batman, as you try to take back control of Gotham City after Scarecrow has united its super-criminals. You can take on criminals with stealth or brutal combat, employ a wide range of gadgets, and there’s even some detective work to be done. New to Batman: Arkham Knight is the inclusion of the Batmobile, too. With it, you can pursue enemies at high speed or engage battle mode for maximum firepower.

It’s best if you play Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City before tackling Batman: Arkham Knight if you want the full story, and thankfully they’re both playable on current consoles thanks to the Batman: Return to Arkham collection. But even if you jump in with the third and last instalment, you’ll still very much enjoy yourself.

Batman: The Telltale Series

Telltale Batman 3

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Before shutting down shop and then reopening again, Telltale Games worked its magic and delivered not one, but two series based on The Batman. They were good, too, but if you’re wanting to jump in you should start with the first.

Being a Telltale game series, Batman: The Telltale Game Series isn’t a fast-paced action game. That’s not to say there isn’t any action in it, though; just that whenever there is, you’re reduced to just pressing buttons as they pop up on the screen rather then being in control of it. Instead, the focus here is on the narrative, which you’ll direct via dialogue options.

There’s an interesting story here that explores the fractured psyche of Bruce Wayne, and offers a fresh new look at the Dark Knight. Familiar faces show up, but there are some surprises along the way. And once you’re done with Batman: The Telltale Series you can jump into its sequel Batman: The Enemy Within. It continues the story, but has an increased focus on doing a spot of detective work. Needless to say, if you’re not an action game fan, these truly are the best Batman games you can play right now.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

Lego Batman 3 (1)

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Love Batman and LEGO, or at least can put up with the latter for the former? You might want to check out LEGO Batman 3: Beyond, the latest – and best – LEGO game focused on The Caped Crusader.

As its name suggests, LEGO Batman 3 does indeed take you “Beyond Gotham”. It takes you to space, in fact, where working with other heroes from the world of DC Comics you need to thwart Brainiac before he can destroy Earth. That means playing your way through a number of story-driven levels. And, as those familiar with LEGO games will know, along the way you’ll unlock those very same DC superheroes for use, as well as the villains you find yourself up against.

It’s just that shame that unlike LEGO Batman 2 and other LEGO games released around the same time, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham doesn’t feature an open world for you to explore between missions. Instead it simply features a number of smaller hubs. Still, you shouldn’t let it put you off if you’re after the best Batman games you can play right now.

Injustice 2

Injustice 2 SP Header

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Okay, so Injustice 2 isn’t a Batman game per se. He is the main protagonist of the game’s story, however, which has him leading a resistance against a Superman turned evil.

If you’ve ever wanted to pit Batman against Batman, or any other DC superhero or villain, Injustice 2 is the game for you. Developed by NetherRealm Studio, the gameplay is understandably very similar to that of the recent Mortal Kombat entries, only with the finishing moves very much toned down. DC doesn’t want to you to see The Batman rip out The Joker’s heart, after all. Superheroes don’t do things like that.

The great thing about Injustice 2 is that even if you don’t like going online to fight against others, it has plenty of content for you. Its story mode is very cinematic and will take you a fair few hours to complete, then there are towers to tackle where you can earn rewards to customise your fighters. It’s one of the best superhero-based fighting games ever made, and the inclusion of Batman means fans of The Dark Knight will probably want to check it out.

Batman: Arkham VR

Batman Arkham VR

  • Available on: PS4, PC (Requires VR headset)

If you want to be The Batman, chances are playing Batman: Arkham VR is the closest you’re going to get.

Available on PS4 and PC, Batman: Arkham VR allows you to don a VR headset and step into The Batman’s shoes for a little while. It’s essentially an interactive movie, requiring you to solve some puzzles to progress the story, but there are some fantastic surprises and action sequences along the way. It’s just a shame that it’s so short-lived.

Batman: Arkham VR‘s brevity means you might want to wait until you can pick it up during a sale. But honestly, if you’re a Batman fan who owns a VR headset, you should do your best to experience it. There’s nothing else like it.
