Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness casts you as a greedy and/or stupid idiot.
Okay, that’s not actually in the trailer or press release but it’s hard to draw any other conclusion once you know about this game’s world. Based up on a popular manga, which in turn became a TV series, it takes place in and around a massive hole in the ground, the titular Abyss.
Yes, people go in and don’t come back but, hey, there are artefacts to be had. None of the characters featured in the trailer seem particularly desperate, a la Roadside Picnic, so it’s either greed, stupidity or the absurd need to prove themselves. And now, this fall, you can join their number.
The trailer is an odd mash-up of cutesy graphics and gruesome cut-scenes, including a moment where a squat, SD style character has their guts sucked out. The game sports a story authored by series creator Akihito Tsukushi as well as drawing upon the anime itself. You’ll be exploring, battling monsters, plundering treasure and more, with either an English or Japanese soundtrack (the game is already out in Japan), though you’re cast as an anonymous Cave Raider, not a specific character from the anime or manga.
Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, published by Spike Chunsoft and developed by Chime Corporation, will arrive digitally on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam) this fall. You’ll also shortly be able to pre-order a regular and collector’s edition of the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions.
