Jason Momoa is Reportedly in Talks to Star in the Live-Action Minecraft Movie

Minecraft

A live action Minecraft movie is in the works and Jason Momoa is set to star.

Yes – Khal Drogo, Aquaman, Conan the Barbarian, that Jason Momoa. Granted, this isn’t set in stone but The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Momoa and his people are in final negotiations with Warner Bros., who are putting out the movie, based on the construction-oriented game.

The movie is set to be directed by Jared Hess who directed the Napoleon Dynamite movie and co-wrote it with his wife Jerusha Hess. Given that the Minecraft movie will almost certainly be played for comedy, this seems like a smart move.

However, we’re still scratching our heads over Momoa. He’s not necessarily the only star and he could, in fact, be part of an ensemble cast so we have our fingers crossed that he’s playing an over the top “mighty warrior” type who is, in fact, a bit crap. UPDATE: It has been suggested he’s playing Gabriel the Warrior.

There have been a few supposed leaks, suggesting that the movie involves Minecraft leaking in the real world but those could also be sheer speculation. Normally, turning a video game into a movie is a risky gambit but, like Fortnite, Minecraft has such a huge following that you can guarantee it’ll make a profit. That, presumably, had something to Warner Brothers nabbing the rights.

Still, it’s early days yet and, since this report proves the cast hasn’t been finalised, we wouldn’t expect to see a Minecraft movie any time before 2024.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
