Greedfall 2: The Dying World, a prequel to 2019’s colonialist action-RPG, is coming in 2024.
And yes, we do mean prequel. Developer Spiders has chosen to set Greedfall 2 before the events of the original, which saw multiple nations, your own included, plundering.. sorry, “colonising” the island of Teer Fradee.
The prequel will, once again, make you a stranger in a strange land. The difference is that, instead of being one of the colonists, you’re a Teer Fradee native who’s dragged off to the mainland, to the continent of Gacane, and, according to Spiders, must “..end one man’s ambitions of conquest, which could spell the end for the continent and your island.”
We got lot of joy out of the original Greedfall, calling it “An impressive debut for what could well become a classic series.” Casting you as a native should fix one of our few gripes with the original, that your faction was painted in a more positive light than the others.
Another change is that the game will feature more tactical combat. We’re certainly curious about the foes that Spiders are rustling up; Greedfall had a fairly wide range of enemies with, mercifully, not an orc, goblin or dragon in sight. But away from Teer Fradee, who is there to fight?
We’re also curious as to how Spiders is going to handle the connection between the two games. Yes, the events of Greedfall haven’t happened yet, so there’s no need to carry over your choices. But Greedfall 2 takes place a meagre three years before the original, when the Malichor plague is out and about, hence the game’s subtitle.
In other words, nothing you do in Greedfall 2 is going to stop the continued colonisation of Teer Fradee. And you clearly will succeed in preventing the “..end for the continent and your island,” because, otherwise, Greedfall couldn’t take place. Spiders is going to have to work hard to convince you that your quest has real weight.
We have our fingers crossed the developer can pull it off, but we’ll have to wait a couple of years to find out for sure. Greedfall 2: The Dying World is set for a 2024 release, landing on PC and consoles.
