We have good and bad news about WB Games’s upcoming free-to-play brawler Multiversus.
The bad news is that Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul’s Gus Fring isn’t in it – at least, not yet. Yes, we’ve seen the pictures floating around Twitter but, cool as they were, we’re 99% sure they’re photoshopped. Why are we not 100% sure? Because while a murderous, box-cutter wielding drug kingpin might seem like a bad fit for this series-spanning game, Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark’s in there and she murders people then wears their faces.
The good news is that the story trailer for this Smash Bros-style platform fighter is absolutely amazing. We’re not going to spoil all of it, and we strongly urge you to watch it for yourself, but Shaggy from Scooby Doo goes Super Sayan and punches Bugs Bunny in the face. We repeat, Shaggy punches Bugs Bunny in the face.
The trailer also introduces the Iron Giant, who gets to meet his idol Superman, though wading into a brawl isn’t exactly in line the way he’s portrayed in the 1999 animated movie. Taz the Tasmanian Devil is also introduced, meaning that, as of now, there are thirteen confirmed fighters. Those fighters are:
- The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant)
- Taz (Looney Tunes)
- Velma (Scooby Doo)
- Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)
- Batman (DC Animated Universe)
- Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes)
- Finn the Human (Adventure Time)
- Garnet (Steven Universe)
- Harley Quinn (DC Animated Universe)
- Jake the Dog (Adventure Time)
- Reindog (an original character made for the game)
- Shaggy (Scooby Doo)
- Steven Universe (Steven Universe)
- Tom and Jerry (Tom and Jerry)
- Superman (DC Animated Universe)
- Wonder Woman (DC Animated Universe)
More are yet to be revealed – we’ve got our fingers crossed for Scorpion from Mortal Kombat though we’re very happy that Superman and Batman have their Justice League/Animated Series voice actors, George Newbern and Kevin Conroy respectively.
Multiversus is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles and PC. Its release date is as yet unconfirmed – however, there is a closed alpha and closed beta taking place during May, running between the 19th and 27th of May. You’ll need a WB account but you can sign up for the closed alpha here.
As for the open beta, it’ll start in July 2022. The game will support one on one brawls, 2 vs 2 match and 4 vs 4 punch-ups, including cross-play, so there should be something for everyone.
Well, not you, Gus. Sorry.
