Horizon Forbidden West’s Latest Patch Adds New PS5 Graphical Options

Horizon Forbidden West Patch 1.17

A new patch for Horizon Forbidden West patch makes the Playstation 5 version of its post-apocalyptic world a little prettier.

Patch 1.17 for adds a wealth of graphical options to Horizon Forbidden West that, provided you’ve got a TV that supports them, can make for a smoother, more visually-appealing Horizon experience. That’s not to say the unpatched game is ugly – set in a world where humanity was all but erased from the planet – it’s pretty gorgeous as is. But these new features, available as of now, go that extra mile.

The graphical tweaks are, according to developer Guerilla’ patch notes, as follows:

  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and High Refresh Rate (HFR) support
  • VRR improves dynamic resolution scaling on 60Hz
  • VRR & HFR targets a refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz
  • New “Balanced” Graphics Mode introducing 40Hz for supported displays

You will need a TV that supports VRR on the PlayStation 5 to make use of most of these tweaks. TechRadar has an excellent list, though you’ll have to spend over £500 or so to get a television that fits the bill, if you haven’t already done so.

Visual options aside, the patch also includes a wealth of other fixes, which you can find listed in the patch notes here.  Guerilla are also looking into a range of other issues and will likely patch those if, indeed, they turn out to be genuine reproducible issues.

If you’ve not played Horizon Forbidden West (itself a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn) you absolutely should. In our review, we called it “..a game that’s ever so easy to get lost in”, and awarded it a massive 10 out of 10. It’s out now for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
