Announced at Anime Expo 2022, Inescapable will thrust your hapless character into a reality TV show where the last one standing gets $500,000.
Sure, that’s small potatoes compared to Squid Games’ financial bounty but, even though they’re there against their will, you can bet at least a few of the game’s 11 contestants will be happy to try their hand at dispatching the others. And, with Inescapable set on an island paradise, it’s not like there’s anywhere else to go.
If that premise sounds a little familiar, you’re not mistaken. Developer Dreamloop Games and publisher Aksys games have made no bones about the fact it’s inspired by Danganronpa and the setup does resemble that of the second title in that series.
However, there’s no teddy bear headmaster to lay down the “law” – in fact, there are no rules at all. Instead, Inescapable seems set to rely on more conventional, Monokuma-free deduction and interactions. Dreamloop has teased that no-one can be trusted, stating that:
“Inescapable’s story explores human nature and how far people will go for social clout, wealth, and their own desires—and how much further they might be willing to go when they have permission to ignore the rules..”
The trailer goes so far as to suggest that your character, Harrison, could be just as shady. We have our fingers crossed that this is the case; we’ve long craved a Danganronpa-style visual novel/deduction game where you can get away with murder.
Inescapable doesn’t have a solid release date yet but is set to arrive some time next year, landing on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam).
