PlayStation VR2, Sony’s next-gen VR headset, now has a release window. At long last.
Sony has been revealing the kit bit by bit, starting with the controllers, later the headset itself and finally it has confirmed (roughly) when PlayStation VR2 will be available. It’s set for an “early 2023” release, which we’d take to mean either January, February or March.
PlayStation VR2 was officially announced back in January 2022 and is a more powerful piece of kit than the original PSVR. You can check out the headset’s specifications here, but the biggest change is that the PSVR2 has headset-mounted cameras, compared to the original which had the PS4’s camera tracking the lights on your headset. In other words, the PSVR2 should be much, much more accurate than its predecessor.
As you might expect, you’ll need a PlayStation 5 to use the PSVR2 headset and, unlike the Oculus Quest 2, there’ll be a wire running from the headset to the PlayStation 5. But, given the sheer power of the console, you can expect PlayStation VR2 games to look better than on the Quest.
There are however, two things we don’t know. Firstly, there’s no price point for the headset as yet and we don’t know if the PSVR2 will handle regular PSVR games. Hopefully Sony will be forthcoming this this information as both are likely to be a big deal when it comes to picking up the PSVR2 or just leaving it on the shelf.
