GoldenEye 007 is Coming Soon to Xbox Game Pass

GoldenEye 007

Today, it was announced during the Nintendo Direct livestream that GoldenEye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online. But it’s not alone: it’s also coming to Xbox Game Pass.

That’s right: 25 years after its original release, the hit favourite GoldenEye 007 is making its way to modern consoles. Don’t get too excited: this isn’t a remake or even a remaster. It’s a slightly updated version of the original, featuring “new features for the modern age of gaming”.

Those new features include dual analogue stick support (yes, GoldenEye 007 is so old that it comes from a time where thumbsticks weren’t a thing), native 16:9 screen ratio and up to 4K resolution, and a full suite of unlockable achievements.

If you’ve never played GoldenEye 007, this is a stealth shooter lauded for being genre-defining. From a first-person perspective, you’ll step into the shoes of none other than James Bond (of the Pierce Brosnan era – Daniel Craig was barely out of school when this originally released). You’ll then head out on an epic mission to stop the GoldenEye satellite being unleashed on the world.

The fan-favourite mode of GoldenEye 007, though, is undoubtedly its split screen multiplayer. There, up to four players battle it out against each other in a true test of stealth skills. You’ll be glad to hear that multiplayer is making a return in both the Switch and Xbox versions. Though, while the Nintendo Direct announcement specified online multiplayer, there’s no mention of that on the Xbox Blog.

Still, beggars can’t be choosers, and if this is an old favourite of yours, you can jump in soon at no extra cost thanks to Xbox Game Pass. And if you own a digital version of Rare Replay, the collection of Rare classics, you’ll be able to claim and download GoldenEye 007 free to keep. Nice.

There’s no firm release date for this yet, but more information will be coming soon.
