Microsoft has announced the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller, a cheaper version of the original Elite Series 2 Core Controller
Is it ridiculous, stupidly cheap? No, but if you’re looking for a higher-end controller, it’s a few dollars (or pounds, or euros) cheaper than the original. The Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller will set you back $129.99 while the normal Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller will cost you $179.99. So this new model represents a $50 saving.
Hang on, though.. there’s got to be a catch. Yes, there is, but we’re happy to report that the Core isn’t crafted entirely out of matchsticks and dog poo. Both models include “..adjustable-tension thumbsticks, wrap-around rubberized grip, and shorter hair trigger locks,” for better play, as well as remappable buttons.
What’s missing from the Core version is the interchangeable buttons and paddles. Yes, these can be purchased separately but, as show in this Microsoft Expertzone video, you’re left with holes where the paddles go. We’ve yet to get our hands on a Core but we do wonder whether those gaps would prove irritating.
So, essentially, the Core should be an extremely robust controller, with some but not all of the features that make the regular Elite controller such a renowned piece of gaming kit, to the point that Sony have come up with their own competitor.
You can find out more from the official Xbox site, and pre-order the Core controller, currently available in white with black grips, from Microsoft’s website.
