The Long Dark’s paid expansion, Tales from the Far Territories, is on the way and developer Hinterland Studio has let us know what to expect.
This snowy survival game launched in August 2017 after three years in Early Access, with a survival mode and two out of five story episodes. Episodes three and four were released in the intervening years, free, with the fifth arriving in late 2023. And now, the first paid The Long Dark expansion, Tales from the Far Territories is kicking off next month.
Yes, Hinterland are releasing paid DLC before the game’s story mode is complete. But given that they’ve been working on the game for eight years, we’re sure they’ll benefit from the injection of cash that, priced at $19.99, Tales from the Far Territories will offer.
Tales from the Far Territories promises big changes for the game’s survival mode, delivered in six parts. The first part arrives this December 5th, with the remaining chunks arriving over the course of the next year. Some of the promised changes/additions include:
- Completely new regions
- Improved cooking
- A photo mode where you need to develop your own film
- New animals
- Micro-stories, set in these new regions
You can find the full list of additions here, on the official The Long Dark site. A couple of those changes, such as the improved cooking system, seems as if they should be free. Certainly, we had a grumble at The Callisto Protocol for putting content behind a paywall.
But the good news is that there are whole raft of free improvements on the way. These include turning acorns into coffee, a better fishing system, new harvesting animations and more. So while those who own the base-level game won’t be able to shove a strawberry pavlova in their backpack, the Long Dark experience, which is pretty great as is, should get even better.
If you’ve not delved into The Long Dark, you can pick it up on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It’s free to PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium and Game Pass subscribers and is also heavily discounted on the PlayStation, Epic and Steam stores. As for the expansion, you can wishlist The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory on Steam here.
