The Callisto Protocol’s monsters, Biophages, aren’t a friendly lot. But how do you dodge and block to avoid their gruesome assaults?
And we do mean gruesome because even more so than Dead Space, some of the player deaths featured are sheer nightmare fuel. If you want to avoid being on the receiving end of some amateur dentistry in The Callisto Protocol, you need to learn how to block and dodge melee attacks.
The good news is that, once you’ve got the knack, both of these moves are relatively simple to pull off. The bad news is that, depending upon which other games you’ve been playing, you could end up overthinking it.
In order to duck left, hold the left thumbstick left. In order to duck right, hold the thumbstick right. You need to be holding the stick in that direction before the enemy attacks you. And, if the enemy just attacks you with a single attack, it doesn’t matter which way you dodge.
If, on the other hand, an enemy tries to come at you with multiple, chained attacks, you’ll need to keep switching from left to right. Dodge in the same direction twice in a row and they’ll hit you. Blocking is simpler – hold down on the thumbstick before the enemy attacks and you’ll block some but not all of the damage. Dodging, on the other hand, avoids all damage.
Simple, eh? However, you may have to fight your own instincts. We kept getting murdered by monsters because we were trying to be too clever. We were trying to time our dodges and blocks in time with the attacks and watching which limb the enemy attacked with.
Instead, just hold down dodge or block well before the enemy attacks – a second or two is fine. If you’re feeling flashy you can pull off a perfect dodge by moving the stick just before an infected limb comes flying towards your face, but beyond there being an achievement / trophy available for doing so, it’s not worth the risk. It’s survival, not style points that truly counts in The Callisto Protocol.
And that’s how to dodge and block in The Callisto Protocol. Enjoy your jaunt through the universe’s worse prison.
