Sorry, Uncharted fans, the series isn’t coming back, at least not at Naughty Dog’s hands. We could get a The Last of Us Part III, though.
Those are two of the takeaways from Buzzfeed’s interview with Neil Druckmann, a co-creator of both franchises. Yes, Uncharted was a huge, huge franchise but as far as Druckmann and, presumably, Naughty Dog as a whole is concerned, the series is done.
Still, at least there’s The Last of Us? With HBO’s show boosting sales of the games there’s got to be a third game in the works, right? Not according to Druckmann, who states:
“..if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”
We are going to take that with just a pinch of salt. Naughty Dog has stretched the truth before. For example, they went so far as to create a The Last of Us Part II trailer featuring a character that wasn’t in that part of the game. But we’d rather see a strong third game rather than just a so-so new entry.
However, we’re not convinced that the next The Last of Us has to be about Ellie and co. There are plenty of stories that could be told, without needing to bring her or Abby back. Why not take a leaf out of Gearbox’s book and let another company explore the world. Tales from The Last of Us, anyone?
