Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is set to receive a new patch which, amongst other things, will address the game’s frame rate issues.
Developer/publisher Square Enix seems hopeful that, post-patch, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition will run more smoothly. We reviewed this edition of the classic JRPG and, while we enjoyed it, we noted it had issues, frame rate included. Given that this is a remaster of a 1999 PlayStation 1 game, that’s not a good look.
This upcoming patch isn’t the first the game has received, though it’s still sitting at “Mixed Reviews” on Steam. The Eurogamer-spawned Digital Foundry took a look at the Radical Dreamers Edition and concluded it ran at a lower frame rate than the original PS1 game. Ouch.
According to Square Enix, the patch will include “.. a wide range of changes, such as framerate improvements, changes to the growth system for Pip and fixes for other bugs.” That’s all well and good, but the game launched in April of last year. So that’s ten months people have been dealing with this issue.

Granted, it’s not a completely game-breaking issue and it does help that the game’s combat is turn-based. But will this patch will be enough to get the game back into players’ good books? The update is set to arrive later this month, across Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch, so fingers crossed.
