At first glance, this month’s PlayStation Plus offerings make Xbox Games With Gold look a little stingy.
Instead of two monthly games, which is what PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers normally get, Sony is handing out.. count ’em.. four games! Microsoft, on the other hand, started off handing out three and a half, via their Xbox Games With Gold scheme, then dropped it to two. They stopped handing out Xbox 360 games but didn’t replace those offerings with anything else.
So what’s on offer this month? There are four titles and all but one feature a PlayStation 5 native mode. There’s Destiny 2: Beyond Light, Evil Dead: The Game, Olli Olli World and Mafia: Definitive Edition. Destiny 2: Beyond Light is an an expansion pack and requires the original, which is why we’re counting it as half a game.
But there’s a catch. No, we’re not talking about the fact that, unlike PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass regularly features Day 1 releases. The catch is that Sony are ditching the PlayStation Plus Collection, which gives PS5-owning PlayStation Plus Subscribers 19 games.
Those games, including God of War and more, are free to play as long as you’ve got a PlayStation Plus subscription. And, unlike the Premium and Extra games, won’t become unavailable further down the line. At least they are right now – as of May 9th, that entitlement will be going away.
So yes, Sony is giving PlayStation Plus subscribers an extra one and a half games. But, while this isn’t necessarily why we’re getting more this month, they’re taking away 19 others. So, while you’re downloading this month’s offerings, remember to claim the PlayStation Plus Collection before it’s gone.
