Bandai Namco Has Announced a New Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi is back, Namco Bandai has unexpectedly revealed.

The Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi announcement came yesterday as part of a Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament. What’s especially surprising is that it’s been over fifteen years since we got the last game, which landed on PlayStation 4.

So should you be excited for this reveal? If you’re a Dragon Ball Z fan, yes, since it promises to deliver plenty of Saiyan-on-Saiyan brawling. It could, admittedly, be awful – the last entry in series, which hit the PlayStation 2, was starting to slip just a little.

But since Bandai Namco have apparently abandoned the series’ numbering system it looks as if they’re starting from scratch. Unlike Dragon Ball FighterZ, the series allowed players to move in three planes, side-stepping attacks. So you can expect this entry to follow suit. Besides which, Bandai Namco will want to avoid having two near identical products.

The trailer doesn’t show an awful lot of gameplay though it looks pretty enough. Despite this surprise reveal we doubt we’ll be seeing the game at least until the third quarter of this year. But the response to the trailer has been generally positive, particularly since there’s a certain nostalgia factor involved.

Bandai Namco hasn’t said which platforms it’s arriving on, so we should be getting more information down the line. But, given how long it’s been since Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 hit the PS2, we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
