Did you know that GameSpew was founded by a couple who love video games?

That’s right. And so it’s only natural that we’d want to share our love with video games with other couples. Games can be a solitary experience, or they can require you to play with other people, but only via the internet. Thankfully, plenty of games out there exist that can be played with another person in the comfort of your own home.

Whether it’s a game that promotes couch co-op or a bit of light competition, there are plenty of excellent games for couples on PS4. But it can be hard to find them. Thankfully, we’ve rounded up the best of them right here. So if you’re looking for a way to wind down on an evening with your loved one, have a click through our list of best games for couples on PS4.

If you have Sony’s newest console, be sure to also check out the best games for couples on PS5.

1. Diablo III

Diablo? As one of the best games for couples on PS4? Absolutely! Look, our relationship was essentially founded on playing Diablo III in co-op, and more than a decade later we’re still going strong. We’re not saying it’s because we spent all that time slaying demons in hell together. But it certainly didn’t hurt.

If you’re into action RPGS and enjoy collecting loot, Diablo really is a fantastic game to play in co-op with someone you love. Few games work as seamlessly in co-op, with both players keeping their own progress, so you can pick up whenever you like. But the real draw of Diablo III is just how much fun it is. You don’t realise how much you need to decimate hordes of hundreds of demons until you’re doing it.

2. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Any LEGO game makes for a great game to play as a couple. But we’ve opted to highlight the latest game from Traveller’s Tales: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. This epic adventure has gamified all nine mainline entries from the Star Wars series, allowing you to re-enact all the key scenes, but made out of LEGO. What more could you want?

With drop-in, drop-out couch co-op, LEGO games are some of the best games for couples on PS4, particularly if one of you isn’t as big a gamer as the other. The LEGO games require little skill, and simply running around environments, smashing up bricks is great. They’re the sort of games you’ll not be able to play without a silly ol’ grin on your face. And really, when you’re looking for a game to play with your significant other, fun should be the most important thing.

3. Degrees of Separation

Degrees of Separation is a co-op puzzle platform game that requires two players to work together in order to progress. Set amongst beautiful scenery, characters Ember and Rime are in love – but they’re separated by an otherworldly force. Ember can control fire, while Rime can manipulate cold and ice. The opposing elements need to work in unison to allow Rime and Ember to come together.

Be warned though: Degrees of Separation gets very tricky. Its puzzles are challenging, so you and your significant other need to have patience and put your thinking caps on in order to get through it. We can confirm it’s worth the struggle though; it’s a touching adventure and its underlying theme of wanting to be together despite all the odds will undoubtedly warm your heart. It’s one of the best games for couples to play together on PS4 thanks to its themes and fully co-operative gameplay.

4. It Takes Two

It Takes Two

Alright, so if you’ve seen any of our other co-operative-based lists, you might have already seen It Takes Two on there. But what can we say; this co-op only game really is one of the best of its kind. We couldn’t possibly have a list of best PS4 games for couples without including it. Not least because the game revolves around a couple who need to work together to solve their problems. Reflecting real life, much?

Of course, the problems in It Takes Two aren’t quite as mundane as who is going to make dinner, or who is taking the bins out. You play as Cody and May, a married couple on the brink of divorce. Their young daughter catches wind of this, and unwittingly casts a spell on them, turning them into a pair of tiny, animated dolls.

Now stranded in a strange body in a world that’s far too big for them, Cody and May must overcome their difficulties and work together in order to get back into their human forms. Cue lots of puzzles, adventure segments, and some of the most gorgeous animation you’ve seen since you last watched a Pixar movie. The best part of It Takes Two? It can only be played with two players, so each player is just as important as each other.

5. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

House of Ashes

If you and your partner are into horror, then House of Ashes is certainly one of the best games you can play together on PS4. It’s the third game in Supermassive Games’ Dark Pictures Anthology series, following on from Man of Medan and Little Hope. This one might just be our favourite, though, thanks to its fantastic setting and excellent story.

House of Ashes follows a group of American soldiers – and one Iraqi soldier – on a mission that ends up going awry. In searching for a weapons bunker, they inadvertently fall into an ancient underground temple. But it turns out they’re not alone. Something very scary lurks in the shadows, and you’re going to need to work together to get out alive.

Like other games in the Dark Pictures Anthology, the choices you make affect the outcome. Who lives and who dies is entirely up to you. If you’re playing with your partner, each of you will be in control of a handful of characters, solely responsible for their decisions. Two of the characters are in a relationship, too, adding an extra dose of romance into the otherwise spooky action. As long as you’re not afraid of the dark, House of Ashes is one of the best PS4 games for couples.

6. Phogs

Not only is Phogs utterly adorable, it’s also one of the best games for couples to play together on PS4. Why? Well, both players take control of one end of a two-headed dog. And so, you need to co-operate well with your partner about where you’re going to move. Manoeuvring a long sausage of a dog with two heads is a tricky business, you see, so unless you’re both on the same page you’re not going to get very far.

Phogs is broken up into levels, with each level having its own goals, its own little world to explore, and a number of collectibles to find. There are puzzles to solve, which will again require you to work together. It can be tricky at times, but overcoming Phogs‘ puzzles is very satisfying.

And did we mention that you can enjoy dressing your doggos up in funky hats? What more could you possibly want from a game you can enjoy with your partner?

7. Moving Out

If you haven’t already, chances are you’re going to endure the stress of moving in with your partner at some point. Moving Out, a zany couch co-op game from Team 17, can prepare you for that very experience.

You see, in Moving Out, you take on the role of a removals company. It’s your job to take people’s belongings from their house and load them – carefully and quickly – into your van. You’ll need to work together with your partner to carry heavy objects, co-ordinating your movements to ensure stuff gets to where it needs to be.

Chances are, though, mayhem is going to ensue. It’s all much easier said than done, as trying to walk in the same direction as someone else in a video game isn’t as easy as you’d think. So don’t be surprised if windows get broken, valuables get trashed, and you end up taking way longer than you were supposed to. It doesn’t matter though. It’s all part of the fun. And so if you’re up for some raucous couch co-op with your partner, Moving Out really is one of the best games for couples on PS4.

Kim's been into video games since playing Dizzy on her brother's Commodore 64 as a wee nipper. She'll give just about anything a go, but she's got a soft spot for story-driven adventures and open world escapades. If she's not gaming, she's probably cooing over pictures of baby animals or watching re-runs of Friends for the 137th time.
