DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos Review

Justice League Cosmic Chaos review header

For younger gamers, DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a fun open world action RPG.

Even more impressive, though, is that DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is also fun for those simply young at heart. You see, no matter how old you are, as long as you’ve got a sense of humour and enjoy exploring a vibrant open world while giving dastardly villains a good beating, chances are you’ll rather like what’s on offer here. It’s simply an enjoyable slice of DC superhero-fuelled action.

Taking place in the colourful seaside town of Happy Harbor, trouble is afoot. Mxyzptlk, the powerful prankster from the 5th Dimension, has flooded the area with his fish-like henchmen and taken control. And he’s not the only villain that the Justice League needs to be concerned about. There’s the likes of Starro, too, who’s taken control of various members and is causing more havoc. And so, it’s up to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to not only save the day, but also their friends.

As you make your way around Happy Harbor, completing missions, unlocking fast travel points and seeking out valuable items, you’re free to switch between Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman as you please. It’s beneficial to do so, too, as each not only has their own range of attacks, but also element and traversal mechanic. Batman, for example, is strong against enemies that have a weakness to water, and can quickly grapple and then glide to cover large distances. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, uses her lasso to not only pull enemies closer to her, but also get around in a brisk manner.

While there is the occasional bit of platforming, and some puzzles to overcome, combat is at the heart of DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos. The good news is that it’s fairly simple but relatively fun. Each character has their own basic combo, but alongside that they also have ranged attacks, special attacks, a focus attack, and even some ultimates. Not all are unlocked at the outset, though. New abilities, and more, are unlocked as you level up, and you can further enhance your characters by upgrading these abilities with resources. A range of artifacts can also be discovered and equipped, with effects such as changing a character’s element.

Overall, there’s quite a lot to consider for a what is a game aimed at children, and some may find it challenging. Being an action RPG, there’s also the issue of sometimes wandering into an area that you’re not quite ready for yet, and being met with enemies that are numerous levels higher than you. Thankfully a range of difficulty setting means that the experience can be tailored to your needs. So, if you’re an adult that wants to fully engage with the game’s systems, you can play it on normal or higher. But young ones wanting little frustration might be better playing on easy or story mode.

What’s also worth considering is that local co-op is available, allowing two players to work together to defeat Mxyzptlk and his cronies. And as players progress through the game, other members of the Justice League are rescued, and can then be called on to assist you in battle. Throw in some fun alternative costumes that can be purchased by finding comics out in the open world, and you have a game that’s surprisingly well-rounded. It even has voice acting and a story that’s admittedly silly but also amusing at times.

Thanks to the sheer amount of combat, DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos can feel a little repetitive at times. We can’t deny, though, that this is a game that has surpassed our expectations. It proves that games for kids can be accessible yet have enough depth for all to enjoy them. And so no matter what your age, if you’re an ardent DC fan or simply love action RPGs, there’s something for you here. You might even crack a smile or two at the game’s silly humour.
