Sherlock Holmes The Awakened Gives Watson a Chance to Shine

Sherlock Holmes The Awakened

Sherlock Holmes The Awakened new trailer features a look at Dr. John Watson, Holmes’ sidekick who’ll be playable in the upcoming game.

If you’re wondering just who the hell would want to play as Watson in Sherlock Holmes The Awakened, Lovecraftian nasties or not, we don’t blame you. Some adaptations, in particular the Basil Rathbone movies, present Watson as a bumbling tagalong. But in the origin stories and in many other adaptations, he’s more than capable of holding his own.

So we’re looking forward to stepping into the quick-witted war veteran’s shoes. He may not have Holmes’s deductive skills but with the Great Detective at risk of losing his sanity, the game will see the good doctor having to step up and save his friend.

It could also be their first joint investigation, since Sherlock Holmes Chapter One ended with their initial meeting. The trailer certainly sells the idea that, unusually for the pair, Watson will have to be the voice of reason. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how the game’s unsettling events affect Watson. Will his time in Afghanistan help or hinder him?

Speaking of war, what’s especially astonishing is that Ukrainian developer Frogwares has been working away during Russia’s invasion. They created a Kickstarter, partly to fund the game and partly to provide a safety net for the studio and its employees. The Kickstarter went on to smash its funding goal.

Weekend Editor // Chris has been gaming since the days of the Acorn Electron, which was allegedly purchased to 'help him with his homework'. You can probably guess how well that went. He’ll tackle most genres – football titles aside – though he has a taste for games that that are post-apocalyptic, horror-oriented or thought provoking in nature.
