Baby Steps looks absolutely ridiculous which isn’t surprising given it takes its cues from Bennett Foddy’s ridiculous QWOP.
But we’re also getting a strange Skyrim vibe from Baby Steps and the prospect of roaming a misty, fantasy world, falling over every few paces, makes us grin. Revealed at last night’s Devolver Direct it has your protagonist transported to a mysterious realm. Hey, it’s happened to the best of us.
Instead of just running free you’re tasked with controlling every single step. Will there be an in-game explanation for this? Possibly, but that’s almost immaterial. It’s the act of stumbling across the landscape that’s set to drive Baby Steps. Plus, like Getting Over it With Bennet Foddy, it’s set to be perfect YouTube fodder.
The highlight of the trailer, however, was the main character, Nate, booting over a a small stone cairn and getting berated for it by a local. We don’t yet know if this just for the trailer or if it’s part of the game but we’re hoping it’s the latter.
Just imagine, walking into some fantasy town, with the NPCs all ready to dole out their stupid, needy Skyrim-style quests. What’s that? Your daughter has been kidnapped by bandits and you’ve been waiting six months for a hero to arrive?
But instead of striding purposefully in, the hero just fall flat on their face in the town square.. again.. and again and again. And if that’s not in the game, we’d pay good money for it to be DLC.
We’ll have to wait till Baby Steps’ next trailer to find out whether being shouted at by villagers is a regular part of the game. Jointly developed by Gabe Cuzzillo, Maxi Boch and Bennett Foddy, it’s set for a 2024 release on PC and console. But in the meantime you can check out the trailer above and wishlist it on Steam.
