Meta Quest 2 is Getting a Performance Upgrade and a Price Drop

We like discounts, and we like powerful tech. The Meta Quest 2 is about to tick both of those boxes as it sees a price reduction alongside a software update that will boost its performance.

This news comes alongside the announcement of the Meta Quest 3, which is launching later this year. But if you already have a Quest 2, this new update may make you hold off on upgrading to a new headset just yet. You see, the free software upgrade, which is coming soon, will boost the Meta Quest 2’s CPU performance by up to 26% and its GPU speed by up to 19%.

That’s a not-insignificant boost which will help to make games look and perform better than they previously have. According to the Meta blog, “you can expect smoother gameplay, a more responsive UI and richer content”. Sounds good, right? The update will also be coming to Meta Quest Pro headsets, although the GPU boost there will be a little less: up to 11%. Still, we’ll take it.

The trailer below shows off the headset upgrade in real time and provides a little more information about what it means:

If you’re yet to own a Meta Quest headset, now might be a good time to pick one up. Sure, you can hold out for the Meta Quest 3 later in the year, but the Meta Quest 2’s price drop makes it a tempting prospect. From 4th June, its price returns to $299.99 for the 128GB model, and $349.99 – the lowest price point ever – for the 256GB version. Considering the Quest 3 will start at $499, that’s a pretty good saving.

There’s no date for when the performance update will be landing on Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro: just “soon”. Until then, you can find out more information on the official Meta blog.
