What’s the deal with Mortal Kombat 1 and crossplay? Find out with our handy guide.
Allowing gamers to play together online regardless of the format they’re playing on, crossplay is now considered as a standard feature by many. It’s especially important in the fighting game genre, as if the player base on a particular format dwindles, it can be hard to find a match and the game effectively becomes dead. You might be wondering, then, if the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series, Mortal Kombat 1, has crossplay?
Unfortunately, right now the answer is no. Mortal Kombat 1 does not have crossplay. Or at least not yet. That means whether you buy it on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch or PC, you can only fight against others online that are playing on the same format. Thankfully, with the game being new, it’s not too much of an issue as there are plenty of people playing. The game has rollback netcode on all formats, too, which makes the experience less prone to lag and other issues. But in the future, as people stop playing the title, it may become harder to find matches online.
You don’t need to worry too much, though, as NetherRealm Studios has stated that crossplay is coming to Mortal Kombat 1 post launch. No time frame has been given though, so we’ll just have to hang tight until the feature is added. Until then, if you want to play Mortal Kombat online with friends, you could always jump into Mortal Kombat 11 which has crossplay between PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
