As if Karlach wasn’t cool enough, Baldur’s Gate 3 features a scene where she will break the fourth wall, addressing the player. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Except, as it turns out, it’s actually a little bit disturbing.
This isn’t some Deadpool-style situation where the character is wisecracking with the reader. Instead, she engages in a kind of a shared meditation with the player character. But, about halfway through, she becomes aware of the player and, to some extent, the nature of her reality.
Watching her try to wrap her mind around these revelations is a little disturbing. She returns to ‘normal’, or at least pretends to. But we’re not sure that she’ll ever be the same again.
So how do you access this scene? Unfortunately, there’s no news on how to trigger the scene ‘organically’ in Baldur’s Gate 3, as Karlach actor Samantha Béart puts it.
Right now, the scene seems only to exist on YouTube. It appears to take place during Act 1 of the game and could be tied to multiple playthroughs. Karlach mentions hundreds of hours, which supports that theory.
As offputting as the scene is, we’re glad it’s in there, since it suggests there’s even more oddities to be found. We’re still exploring the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 but you can bet that, even when we’re done, we’ll be paying a return visit.
