No, we’re not kidding. Grand Theft Auto 5 launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th, 2013. It went on to be remastered for two additional console generations but it was ten years ago that the game first came out.
That’s still two years after Skyrim but this revelation still makes us feel old. On the plus side, we’ve spent hour upon hour upon hour (let’s face it, day upon day) having a blast with developer Rockstar’s open world game.
Xbox 360 owners raised an eyebrow when they heard it was coming on two discs, because the 360 didn’t have a blu-ray drive. But it still made over seven billion dollars for Rockstar. And while Grand Theft Auto 6 is very much in the works, GTA Online is still making money hand over fist.
Looking back, we are a bit disappointed that we never actually got any single-player expansions. GTA 4 got two massive expansions, The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and the Damned. But the rumoured single-player content never materialised.
So how are Rockstar celebrating this anniversary? Suprisingly, they’ve not discounted it. Instead, they’ve added new content to… GTA Online. We were hoping they’d at least add a little something to the single-player game but given that GTA Online is their cash cow we can’t blame them.
The good news is that if you do want to dive back into Grand Theft Auto 5, it’s currently available on Game Pass. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to frantically refresh Rockstar’s Twitter account, just in case they feel like shadow-dropping GTA 6. Hey, it could happen.
