Insomniac has officially confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and its upcoming Wolverine game are set in the same universe, which kind of has us wondering where the Avengers are.
As reported by VGC, Insomniac’s Bryan Intihar, speaking on the Kinda Funny Spoilercast, explained that they share the same universe, known as Marvel 1048.
He also explains that there was a decision made not to include Wolverine in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is fine, since Wolverine tends to roam. During the course of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 he was probably dismembering someone in the Canadian tundra. We can’t say we gave it too much thought.
But we did wonder, every time we swung past Avengers tower – where are Earth’s mightiest heroes? Storywise it’s odd, knowing this universe has a team of super-powered badasses, more than capable of dealing with Venom. How often did someone mention that in Insomniac’s writers room?
But from a gameplay perspective it makes perfect sense, this is a Spider-Man game after all. If Thor just showed up to beat the living daylights out of Venom, where would the game be?
It’s also the same kind of issue that the creators of Marvel’s movies and shows face. For budget and contract reasons the Avengers can’t be there so it has to find excuses. Spider-Man: Far From Home hit the right tone, with Talos admitting he didn’t know how to answer people asking where they were.
So we’d love to see both Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 (there’s bound to be one) lean into the gag. The second game touches on it with Wong and Dr Strange being away, but why not just run with it?
Just have Cap and company giving all these daft Deadpool-level excuses as to why they can’t help. “Sorry, Tony is getting his suit cleaned, and me and Thor have to stop Mecha-Thanos.” I mean.. it’s not like they’re avoiding Spider-Man… right?
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is out on PlayStation 5 now, Insomniac is working on Wolverine (there’s no release window as yet), and the Avengers are off fighting space wizards.
