Best Car Combat Games You Can Play Right Now

Best Car combat games

Want to cause vehicular destruction? You can, but you have to dig for games that allow you to do so. Back in the day you had series like Destruction Derby, Carmageddon and Twisted Metal, all allowing you to cause mayhem in their own particular way. Some of those series are still alive now – we hope at least – but what’s really disappointing is that there haven’t been many others enter the fray. So, if you do want to engage in vehicular destruction, what are the best car combat games available right now?

There’s not all that many to choose from, but we’ve searched far and wide in order to put together a short list of the best car combat games currently available. Some of them are more down to earth, simply pitting cars against each other in destruction derby-style matches. Others are a little more maniacal, allowing players to customise their own vehicles with weapons and more before taking the fight to the competition. In any case, pick up any of these games and you’re sure to find vehicular-based mayhem and fun.

1. Carmageddon: Max Damage

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

It’s pretty old now, so likely won’t impress you with its visuals, but the latest entry in the Carmageddon series is worth a look if you’re keen for some vehicular carnage. In Carmageddon: Max Damage you’ll find yourself getting behind the wheel of a wide range of over-the-top vehicles, competing to emerge the victor across a range of events. Classic Carma is perhaps the most rewarding of these, allowing you to achieve victory by either performing laps around a track, wiping out the competition, or killing all pedestrians. It’s up to you. Multiplayer is available, too, though you might struggle to find competitors. In any case, if you’re after the best car combat games you can play right now, this is a must-have.

2. Gas Guzzlers Extreme

  • Available on: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

You might not have heard of Gas Guzzlers Extreme, but know this: for car combat game fans, this is a bit of a hidden gem. Like many other car combat games on this list, Gas Guzzlers Extreme finds you competing across a range of events. Sometimes it’s more important to get ahead of the pack, then, but it’s always advantageous to take the fight to an opponent. Jump into career mode and you’ll find a range of vehicle to acquire and make your own with a varied assortment of weapons. That presents enough fun in itself; finding the right combination of vehicle and weapons for you is hugely rewarding. Just to make it stand out, Gas Guzzlers Extreme has a mode where you fight off a range of creatures, too.

3. Wreckfest

  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC

If you’re after the best car combat games you can play right now but want the action to be a bit more grounded, look no further than Wreckfest. This is essentially Destruction Derby for the modern age, letting players take part in circuit races and destruction derby events where crashing into your opponents is very much encouraged – if not required. Ultimately though, you’re in charge of the ferocity of the destruction here. Opt for realistic destruction and vehicles won’t be able to take much of a bettering at all. That simply adds to the fun in our opinion though.

4. Crossout

  • Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

If you’re fond of playing against others online, Crossout is a vehicular combat MMO that’s well worth checking out. With a Mad Max style aesthetic, Crossout propels players into hostile future where survivors fight for valuable resources. It’s here that you’re free to design and create the war machine of your dreams, before taking it out to engage others in tense and action-packed PvP battles. Being a free-to-play game, you can download Crossout and give it a try without having to spend anything. Just be aware that if you really get into it, however, you’ll likely want to make a purchase or two at some point.

5. Twisted Metal Black

Twisted Metal Black
  • Available on: PS4

Will we ever get a new Twisted Metal game? We hope so, given the warm reception to the recent TV adaptation. Until then, we’ll have to make do with Twisted Metal Black, originally released on PS2 but ported to PS4 some years ago and therefore also playable on PS5. This classic looks and plays better than ever before on these consoles, though obviously it’s nowhere near as visually appealing as any of the other games on this list. And for those who appreciate such things, it has trophy support. So, if you’re after the best car combat games you can play right now, this is easy to recommend.
