Contra: Operation Galuga Characters and Modes Detailed

Contra Operation Galuga

While we didn’t mind it too much, it’s safe to say that the last entry in the Contra series didn’t really meet the expectation of fans. But forget about Rogue Corps now, as the next entry in the series looks like it’s going to recapture the magic.

Developed by WayForward, a new trailer for Contra: Operation Galuga has just been released and it very much looks like a classic Contra game. That means it’s set to offer intense run ‘n’ gun action through a variety of stages, and while you can go it alone, it’s perhaps better to get a friend involved to back you up. As well as releasing the trailer, Konami and WayForward has revealed some key details about the game, too.

Contra: Operation Galuga will apparently feature six playable characters, unlocked throughout the course of the game. As wall as the leader of the Contra unit, Bill Rizer, there’s also Lance Bean, an expert marksman, Ariana, a skilled warrior from the Galuga Archipelago, Lucia, deputy commander of the Earth Marine Corps, and Lt. Stanley Ironside, a veteran who leads a platoon in the GX Army. SNES gamers might also appreciate that a Probotector robot is playable. Each of these characters will seemingly have their own unique abilities, and perhaps even weapons.

When it comes to modes, you’ll be able to witness the events of Contra: Operation Galuga unfold in Story Mode, or jump into Arcade Mode if you just want to experience pure action. A Challenge Mode will also be included, offering some 30 missions for players to work through. These will include surviving against relentless enemy waves, fighting with limited ammo, and a whole lot more.

Those new to the series or worried that their run ‘n gun skills might not be sharp enough will also be happy to hear that the game will feature a perk shop. Here, players will be able to use credits earned in-game to power up abilities, start stages with certain weapons, increase the amount of time they’re invulnerable after respawning, and more, evening up the odds. Only two of these perks can be equipped per player, however, meaning choices will have to be made.

You can check out the trailer for Contra: Operation Galuga below. The game doesn’t have a set release date as yet, but it’s expected to launch in early 2024. It will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.
