Naughty Dog Has Cancelled The Last of Us Online

The Last of Us Part 1 review 1

For those looking forward to more multiplayer antics in the world of The Last of Us, we have bad news: The Last of Us Online has officially been cancelled.

In a blog post on the developer’s website, Naughty Dog dropped the unfortunate news. It comes after months of speculation surrounding the fate of the title, with its absence from numerous events and shows being noticeable. In any case, little information about the project had been released, and even The Last of Us Online wasn’t announced as its official name. But none of it matters now, as the title will never see the light of day.

It appears that the problem with The Last of Us Online is that it would have required simply too much of the studio’s resources to bring to fruition. “To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games.”, the post reads. “So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”

From the cancellation of The Last of Us Online it’s clear what choice Naughty Dog made – to keep on making single-player narrative games. For the most part, it’s a decision we’re glad the studio has made. No studio makes a single-player narrative game quite like Naughty Dog, after all, and while we’d love to engage in some multiplayer action in the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us, we’d rather not have the studio just making content for that for years to come.

It does beg the question, however, why couldn’t the project have been handed off to another studio? Or could Naughty Dog have been staffed up to be able to deal with the demands of a live service game? Whatever the case, the decision has been made. The Last of Us Online was a victim of being too big and ambitious. It takes a lot of resources to make a successful live service game and keep it running, and in this case they just weren’t there.

As for what’s next from the studio, the blog further reveals “We have more than one ambitious, brand new single player game that we’re working on here at Naughty Dog, and we cannot wait to share more about what comes next when we’re ready.” We look forward to finding out what those are in the future.
