Are you wondering if Helldivers 2 can be played in single player, allowing you to head solo into missions? Here’s what you need to know.
Helldivers 2 has been designed as a co-op game, made to be played with up to three others. But you can play solo if you want. There are a few things to look out for, though, and a few caveats – which we’ll get in to here. But it’s mostly good news: if you prefer to play alone, you can indeed tackle Helldivers 2 solo.
By default, you’ll start out in Helldivers 2 alone on your ship. When you jump into a mission, however, you’ll be teamed up with random players (providing matchmaking is working as intended – there have been a few teething problems at launch).
If you’d rather ensure you’re completely by yourself, no problem: simply go to the menu and toggle to ‘Options’. In there, you can set ‘Matchmaking Privacy’ to be private. When you’re set to private, you’ll no longer be forced into matches with other players.
We’d issue a word of caution, however. The difficulty of Helldivers 2 has been pitched at multiple players, so when you’re playing by yourself, you might find it to be exceedingly tough. The good news is you can change difficulty before you start, so don’t be afraid to turn it down a peg or two. We won’t judge.
We’ve also encountered some optional activities within missions that you can’t do by yourself. For example, we found a door that needed two people to power switches at the same time. These shouldn’t affect completing main tasks by yourself, but it’s something to bear in mind.
