Persona 5 Tactica Review 3 (1)

The best strategy RPGs on PS5

If you like games that make you think, often accompanied with grand stories including warfare, then chances are you’re a fan of the strategy RPG genre, its games known as SRPGs for short. Strategy RPGs have been entertaining players for decades now, with standout titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem and Vandal Hearts being loved by many. The good new is there are plenty of strategy RPGs available on PS5, too. But what are the best? That’s something we aim to answer here.

We’ve assembled a short list of the best SRPGs available on PS5, which will hopefully help you if you’re seeing out a new title to pick up. There’s everything here from a remake of an old classic, to a dark take on a familiar story, and even the latest entry in a beloved SRPG series that prides itself on its humour. So, whether floats your boat, chances are you’ll find something here to love. Something that lets you put your strategies into action and hopefully emerge victorious.

1. Tactics Ogre Reborn

Tactics Ogre Reborn

As its name suggests, Tactics Ogre Reborn takes blast from the past and brings it somewhat up to date for modern consoles and PC. Based on the classic Tactics Ogre, originally released in 2010, Tactics Ogre Reborn remains one of the best SRPGs in existence, featuring a dramatic story and engaging battles.

As well as improved visuals and sound, there are tweaks to the gameplay such as improved pace of battle and autosave, which makes it much more welcoming to newcomers. What more can we say? This is the dream game for strategy RPG fans, being easily the best available on PS5 at this current moment in time.

2. Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless

Disgaea 7 (1)

The Disgaea series has been entertaining gamers with its strategic battles ever since the days of the PS2. On top of that, it aims to make them laugh with its over-the-top characters and scenarios, too. This seventh mainline in the series feels as familiar as ever, but it does boast a number of new features and improvements.

It has more character classes than ever before, for example, and for the first time selected characters can become gargantuan in size, posing a great threat to the characters on a map that remain small. All in all, its humour might not be for everyone, but as far as SRPGs on PS5 go it’s definitely one of the best.

3. Persona 5 Tactica

Persona 5 Tactica Review 1 (1)

Grown fond of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts by spending time with them in Persona 5 or Persona 5 Strikers? Even if you’re not familiar with them, however, you might enjoy Persona 5 Tactica, another spin off that finds them in a strange predicament, but this time with a strategy RPG twist.

That’s right, while Persona 5 was a typical JRPG and Persona 5 Strikers more action focused, Persona 5 Tactica ramps up the strategy, tasking players with taking control of their party to complete objectives across a variety of maps. It still has some touches unique to the Persona series, though, like characters gaining additional moves when exploiting weaknesses and knocking enemies down.

4. The DioField Chronicle

The DioField Chronicle review

Square Enix isn’t afraid of being a bit experimental at times, and often it pays off. The DioField Chronicle is a politically-charged SRPG that feels a little inspired by the likes of Fire Emblem at times.

What makes this title really stand out, though, is its real-time combat system. This is a game that keeps you on your toes, as you need to be aware of the abilities of your units and ensure you make the most of them. Send them off to tackle the incorrect foe, for example, or fail to make efficient use of their unique skills, and you could soon find your efforts coming to an end. Be sure to give this a try if it piques your interest.

5. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale

King Arthur: Knight's Tale PS5 1

Fancy an SRPG that’s a little bit on the dark side? In King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, the legendary king is dead. Or at least he should be. After mortally wounding him once before, the Lady of the Lake bestows you, Sir Mordred, a quest to kill him yet again. The question is, what will you do with your second chance? Will be become a ruthless ruler that worships the Old Faith, or become a respected king that embraces Christianity?

The choice is yours, and along the way you’ll gain new companions and encounter new scenarios based on your choices. A mix of a traditional RPG and an strategy RPG, it’s one of the best on PS5.

6. The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos

Dungeon of Naheulbeuk

If you like your SRPGs to be a little more playful, you’d be wise to check out The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos. Sure, its title may be a bit of a mouthful but don’t let that put you off. This is one of the best strategy RPGs on PS5, packed with lovable characters, humour and, most importantly, some truly engaging turn-based combat.

Set in a wacky fantasy world, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk sees you embark on a quest to find some treasure – but your characters aren’t your typical heroes. They’re awkward, bumbling and, well, just about everything you’d expect role-playing characters not to be. That’s sort-of the point, though, and it’s what makes this game so much fun.

7. Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

Chaos Gate Daemonhunters

There are so many Warhammer 40,000 games. One of our favourites of all time, however, was Chaos Gate, an SRPG released in 1998. Now, over 20 years later, there’s a sequel of sorts. Or at least a spiritual successor. Jump into Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters and you’ll find yourself once again waging war against the forces of Chaos.

You’ll find that the combat is much more fluid and varied this time around, though. And thanks to strange anomalies, you can never rest on your laurels with battlefields keeping you on your toes. In any case, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is one of the best strategy RPGs on PS5, so you should definitely check it out.

8. Relayer

Relayer

Taking place in space, Relayer is the SRPG for those who like big mechs and a dramatic storyline. You’ll spend a lot of time reading text and watching cutscenes here, but there are also some epic battles to take part in too.

As you’d expect, building and maintaining your mechs plays a large role, with plenty of customisation options available. There are a wealth of skills, too. For those that really get into Relayer, a wealth of DLC is also available for the game. But even in its basic form, there’s plenty of content to go at.
