Now on PlayStation, What the Golf? is still more fun than any golf game has any right to be

Calling What the Golf? a golf game is doing it a disservice, really. The word “golf” invokes images of middle-aged people hitting a ball across large swathes of greenery. What the Golf couldn’t be more different if it tried.

But in fact, that’s sort-of the whole premise of the game: to take the concept of golf and turn it on its head. Developer Triband has asked the question, “how can we make golf fun?” and has answered it with aplomb: replacing golf balls with ragdolls, adding in explosions, aping other games in the process and a whole lot more.

Thinking about it, trying to explain What the Golf? is one of those that’ll undoubtedly earn an eyebrow raise from anyone who hasn’t heard of it before. It’s a zany concept, but that’s what makes this physics-based puzzle game just so enjoyable. And now it’s on PS4 and PS5, it can be enjoyed by more people than ever.

Originally released nearly four years ago on PC and Switch, we’re amazed with just how much new content has made its way to What the Golf? in that time. You’re getting a lot of joy for your money here. Alongside a sizeable main campaign, you’ll also find a daily course that changes every 24 hours, a series of specially-themed episodes, party mode, challenges and regular special events. There isn’t one currently live, but it’s set to launch in six days (Easter-themed, we’re betting).

But just making your way through the main campaign is a joyous task that’ll take up several hours. You can simply make your way to the end of each level, or you can play through again, aiming to meet a ‘par’ target, or completing a totally random challenge. For example, a level about scoring a goal might suddenly become about trying to tip over a cat.

In our original review of What the Golf? we called it “something rather special”, going on to say: “The biggest disservice you can do to What The Golf? is to simply assume it’s some kind of arcade golf game. Not even close. It’s one of the most creative, hilarious and unique games you’ll find. A mix of puzzle solving, arcade fun and downright zany concepts, it’s pure entertainment at its finest.”

Four years later, we can’t help but agree: it still is one of the most creative, hilarious and unique games you’ll find. And if you’re yet to play it, what are you waiting for?

What the Golf? is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.
