Evercade reveals the Evercade EXP-R and VS-R: new, cheaper retro gaming options

Evercade VS-R and EXP-R announcement

We’re big fans of the Evercade console and cartridge system. The existing Evercade EXP and Evercade VS — a handheld and home console respectively — allow you to play a huge range of retro and indie titles on specially-created Evercade cartridges. The consoles are already very reasonably priced, as are the cartridges — but the hardware is about to get even cheaper, thanks to newly announced VS-R and EXP-R models.

The handheld Evercade EXP-R will retail at £99.99, a third cheaper than the existing EXP. The main difference is that it doesn’t include a mini-HDMI port: this is a handheld-only device and can’t be connected to a TV in the way the existing EXP can. It also doesn’t include the 18 built-in titles from Capcom due to the end of a licensing agreement. It will, however, be bundled with an Evercade cartridge, so you’ll have games to play right out of the box.

As for the Evercade VS-R, the new, cheaper home console, it’ll be available for just £89.99. For that, you’ll get one controller and one bundled cartridge — and more controllers can be bought separately.

Watch the announce trailer below:

Both the VS-R and EXP-R sport a striking dark grey and cyan colour scheme, which we absolutely love. We have no need for an EXP-R, since our EXP works perfectly, but we might have to find an excuse to add this beauty to our collection…

Both consoles will be available to purchase this July, with pre-orders going live on 30th April. You can find out more information in Evercade’s official blog post.
