Don’t tell Fallout London, but Fallout 4’s getting another next-gen update

There’s a new Fallout 4 update coming, which is good news for fans, not so much for the team behind Fallout London. The Fallout 4 next-gen update arrived last month, but it had something of a mixed receptions. Criticisms included (via IGN) an Xbox performance toggle which did essentially nothing.

Now, developer Bethesda has confirmed that there’s an update to the next-gen Fallout 4 update, dropping this Monday May 13, which promises to make some big improvements. It’ll hit both PC and console and will include “new options for graphics and performance settings as well as further fixes and improvements”.

Bethesda hasn’t specified those options, but you can bet one of the fixes is ensuring that performance settings do work properly. Prior to the release of the next-gen update there were a host of Fallout 4 mods, console and PC alike, that gave the game a graphical overhaul. We’ll be interested to see how these mods compare to the now official next-gen upgrade.

However, we can well imagine the Fallout London team rolling their eyes at this new Fallout 4 announcement. This free PC-based mod, which relocates the game to the titular region, was all set for an April 2024 release date. And, based on what we’ve seen it could still be an absolute treat, looking for all the world like a new Fallout game.

The release of the next-gen update, which made some significant changes to the way Fallout 4, mods in particular, worked, meant the Fallout London team had to put things on hold. We’re hoping this new update doesn’t set their progress back even further. On the bright side, since they’re a team of volunteers in no way affiliated with Bethesda, Microsoft can’t shut them down as they’ve recently done with four game studios. Probably.
