Giant insects in Helldivers 2, firing yellow acid.

Helldivers was originally inspired by Star Wars, not Starship Troopers

Helldivers 2 has Starship Troopers written all over it. But its creative director has shared that the pitch for the original Helldivers stemmed from Star Wars.

As reported by GamesRadar, Helldivers 2 director Johan Pilestedt was speaking at Sweden’s Nordic Game conference, when he revealed that the aim of Helldivers was to essentially make you a Stormtrooper from Star Wars.

Pilestedt wanted to create a game where you were one of the standard Stormtroopers. You know, the poor saps who ran in when Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were rescuing Princess Leia from the Death Star.

“How would you fare as one of the extras in the background? Would you do better climbing into that room, trying to capture the ‘bad guys’ that are trying to take over your lovely Death Star?”, he asks in the talk.

He also makes it very clear that, in both games, you’re the baddies. That might seem obvious, but some of the discourse surrounding Helldivers 2 has been absolutely exhausting. We did almost get an official Star Wars: Imperial Commando game, but it ended up being cancelled.

Pilestedt also shares the secrets behind Helldivers 2’s success, in so much as you can predict how players will embrace your game. He explains that developer Arrowhead Game Studios went in with the intent of creating a hobby for players.

But, while the dev put serious work into planning the game, Arrowhead was astonished by just how popular it became. He acknowledges that their servers just couldn’t cope. Why? Because they’d predicted 150,000 concurrent users and actually got 750,000+.

Pilested also acknowledges the Helldivers 2 PSN account controversy, arguing that it’s absolutely okay to apologise instead of trying to gloss over mistakes. “An apology doesn’t mean you devalue your own brand as an organisation”, he adds.
