Out this August, action-platformer Akimbot has big Ratchet & Clank energy

If you’re a Ratchet & Clank fan, you might want to keep Akimbot on your radar when it launches later this summer. This robot-filled action platformer has you running, jumping and shooting — and thanks to being filled with humour and not taking itself too seriously, we can’t help but be reminded by Ratchet & Clank. And that’s no bad thing.

Coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on 29th August, Akimbot puts you in the big, metal shoes of Exe, a robot who takes no crap from anyone. Accompanied by flying drone Shipset, who gives off big Claptrap energy with his endless optimism and constant quips, Exe’s got a big task on his hands: saving the world. Of course it’s saving the world. Is it ever anything else?

Playing through a demo of Akimbot, we started on a beautifully designed beach. Our goal was simple: keep moving forward until we reached a boat, allowing us to begin our journey. Exe’s moveset is as impressive as you’d expect: he can run, jump, double jump and dash — and combining the right moves at the right time will allow him to almost glide through the air, covering huge distances. It’s fun to be in control of him, then, and every move he pulls off feels smooth and satisfying.

Exe packs in a rather powerful melee punch, allowing him to knock the daylights out of enemies — but that’s probably not going to be your chosen way to battle. You also have an arsenal of guns at your disposal, allowing you to blast through enemies with ease. You’ll need to occasionally shoot the environment, too: we shot down drones which then became floating platforms, allowing us to reach a new island.

What’s nifty is Exe’s ability to hack. We’ve come across various computer terminals and other outlets that have required hacking, and that means completing a minigame. A variety of different minigames are on offer, keeping things varied: we’ve had to complete a Snake-like game, passing through a number of unlock points, and we’ve also had to quickly input the correct buttons shown on screen, amongst other things. It’s a nice touch, meaning you won’t get bored of completing the same hacking minigame time and time again.

The full release of Akimbot promises spaceship flights, multiple different environments, more weapons, plenty of zany characters to meet and a whole lot more. We’re very impressed with what we’ve played so far: this is a stylish and action-packed platformer that, just like Ratchet & Clank, is going to appeal to a wide audience and all age ranges. We’re certainly looking forward to playing more.
