How does a slick and minimalist racing management sim sound, putting you in charge of leading your racing team to victory? Golden Lap probably isn’t like any other racing sim you’ve played. With the focus on management, you’re never behind the wheel, and thanks to its minimalist design you’re never overwhelmed with options or menus, either.

Golden Lap is the latest game from Funselektor, the team that previously brought us the rather great Art of Rally and Absolute Drift. Minimalist racing is the company’s forté, but this is the first time there’s been a focus on management rather than controlling the car itself. It means that Golden Lap can appeal to a wider audience, even if you’re not usually a racing fan — and that’s the hope here.

You’ll need to select your team, your manager and your mechanic. Choosing carefully is important, as each possible hire has their own strengths and weaknesses that can potentially affect how your team performs. It’s not just a case of sitting back and letting them do all the work, though. When it comes to raceday, you’ll be in control, choosing when to pit your racers, what tyres to put on their vehicles and more. It is accessible, sure, but a level of racing knowledge doesn’t go amiss when you’re playing.

That seems to be the real beauty of Golden Lap: it balances simplicity and depth really well, allowing players with no inside racing knowledge to play and enjoy it — but those with a love for motorsport will appreciate the attention to detail.

Between races, you’ll need to balance your money carefully, upgrading your vehicles where you think it’s worthwhile and ensuring you’ve got enough to hire the support staff you need. But it’s on the track where Golden Lap really comes to life. Your cars may only be represented by a circular marker on the track, but seeing your racers climb the leaderboard is exhilarating. And just like any real race, anything can happen: you or another racer could end up in an accident, for example. Or maybe someone will turn up on the morning of the race a little worse for wear.

Due out later this year, Golden Lap is worth keeping on your radar if you’re a fan of games like F1 Manager, or if you like the idea of managing a racing team without having to drive for yourself. Its simplistic style is simply beautiful, and we’ve no doubt this will end up being another success for Funselektor.
