Matchbox Driving Adventures brings tiny toy cars to life this September

Outright Games has just revealed Matchbox Driving Adventures, the very first console and PC game inspired by Matchbox toy cars. Aimed at young players and their families, this adventure-led driving game will allow players to explore, race and plenty more.

On paper, it sounds great. It promises two separate game modes: Adventure and Competition. Adventure mode lets players explore the aptly-named Matchbox Adventure Island at their leisure, picking up quests and taking in the scenery. Competition mode, on the other hand, is all about battling it out on the track and vying to be the fastest racer around.

Competition mode also allows local players to race against each other, in up to four-player split screen. There’s no mention of online racing, which is a shame — but not all that surprising considering it’s aimed at children.

However, we’re a little concerned about the amount of content that will actually be in Matchbox Driving Adventures. There’s only 12 vehicles in the game, for starters. Which, at the side of Hot Wheels Unleashed — with several dozen, and Lego 2K Drive — which lets you build unlimited cars of your own design — sounds rather barebones.

According to the press release, there’s also “over 30 quests”, which sounds rather limited. We wouldn’t be surprised if you’re done with the Adventure mode in a matter of hours.

Still, there are 14 tracks (and variations) which is a reasonable number. And we fondly remember Matchbox cars from our own childhood, so we’re hopeful this will offer some good, clean fun for kids.

Matchbox Driving Adventures is set to launch on 20th September. It’s coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.
