Annapurna’s latest game looks like a blast of 80s joy

Revealed today during the Xbox Games Showcase, Mixtape is a coming-of-age adventure set in the 80s. In development from Annapurna Interactive Beethoven and Dinosaur, the team behind The Artful Escape, Mixtape is set to be another game where music is front and centre — and this time, it’s all about the 80s.

Roxy Music, The Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, Iggy Pop and Siouxsie and the Banshees all feature on the soundtrack, which provides a backdrop of friendship and adventure. Mixtape focuses on three teenage friends at a time of life as they’re preparing to leave high school and move away from their hometown.

By listening to a perfectly curated playlist, they’ll re-enact dreamlike moments from their lives that shaped them — if you played The Artful Escape, it’s a premise that will sound awfully familiar. You’ll spend your time skateboarding, taking photos in an abandoned theme park, playing baseball and letting off fireworks, amongst other things.

Brought to life with a gorgeous art style, Mixtape looks like a great deal of fun — but we’re going to have to wait a while to play it. It’s slated to land at some point in 2025, when it’ll be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. We’ll be keeping a keen eye out for more information on Mixtape in the coming months.
