Sub-Species is R-Type meets Subnautica and you can play it soon

Whichever way you slice it, the ocean is seriously scary. We’re not even talking about alien oceans, either; strange creatures lurk in the depths, giant squid included, there are potentially three million undiscovered shipwrecks lying on the seabed, and yet we’ve explored a tiny fraction of our seas. Now, Sub-Species is set to take things to the next level.
This free-roaming shoot-’em-up takes its cues from Ecco the Dolphin and The Abyss, inviting you to explore a world where an alien infection has conquered our oceans. With only your tiny vessel to protect them, your pilot will speed around underwater, taking on creatures that make anglerfish look like lovely, pettable puppies.
The trailer, which you can watch below, definitely has our attention. We’re big Ecco the Dolphin fans and while Ecco’s arsenal was limited to headbutts and sonar attacks, we’re always on the lookout for opportunities to explore virtual oceans, the deeper the better. And, given the legal drama surrounding the Subnautica series, we wouldn’t count on seeing Subnautica 3 any time soon.
“The deep ocean is the closest thing we have to an alien world on Earth,” explains developer creative director Manus Burke, and they’re not wrong. As a multi-directional shooter you’ll be able to roam that world relatively freely, but we expect it’ll lock you in with its more gruesome bosses.
Unfortunately, Sub-Species doesn’t have a release date but Howling Hamster Entertainment promises a demo is dropping shortly. In the meantime, you can wishlist Sub-Species here, and for more subaquatic shenanigans, Subnautica is currently 75% off on the PlayStation Store.
