Mod for ’90s-inspired FPS Ultrakill makes Doom playable in-game

Love Ultrakill? You’re not alone – this ’90s-style Doom-inspired FPS is sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, despite still being in Steam Early Access. Now, a modder has taken its FPS shenanigans to the next level by making Doom playable in-game.
As spotted by Dave Oshry, founder of Ultrakill’s developer New Blood, the mod in question will allow you to run the original ’90s Doom on the game’s terminals to the point where, if you’ve got the patience, you can play the whole game through.
The mod in question is the work of developer Squaresweets and can be found here. Ideally you’ll want to own the full version of Doom or Doom 2 but if you don’t you can always use the free shareware Doom wad.
While it adds Ultrakill to the vast collection of things that will run Doom, the mod doesn’t lock you into id Software’s shooter. You can back off from the terminals, in case you’re worried about being skewered just as to dispatch a Baron of Hell.
Impressive as it is, it’s not the only game you can play Doom in. One accomplished modder even made Doom playable in… Doom. No, really, you can play Doom and then open Doom inside it. So far, there doesn’t seem to be a way to run Doom inside Doom inside Doom, but give it time.
Why make Doom playable in Ultrakill? It’s not exactly the most optimal way to play the game, but there’s a badge of honour in getting Doom running in or on an unexpected medium. We’ve even seen it running on a pregnancy test.
Want to try this out for yourself? Ultrakill is currently available in Steam Early Access and the Doom mod can be found here.
