Directive 8020 Walkthrough: Full guide to saving all crew members and finding all collectibles

It’s been a while, but the latest entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology is finally here. Directive 8020 takes the series to space, putting you in control of the crew of the Cassiopeia. There only meant to orbit the planet of Tau Ceti f, but something has gone horribly wrong. Now you need to guide them to safety across multiple episodes, making important decisions that will change their lives as you go. Needless to say, saving all crew members in Directive 8020 will be a challenge unless you have a handy walkthrough.
Thankfully that’s what you’ve got right here – a Directive 8020 walkthrough that will enable you to save all crew members while also finding all of the game’s collectibles. And once you reach the end, you can use the game’s new Explorer feature to easily check out any alternative routes that interest you as well search out the game’s O Death secrets which we’ve also located. Hopefully you’ll find it useful as you play this latest, and possibly best, entry in the Dark Pictures series.
General tips before you start
Explorer or Survivor
Directive 8020 has two modes – Explorer and Survivor. Survivor offers an experience similar to previous games in the series, in which you have to live with your actions and decisions until you reach an ending. Explorer allows you to rewind and change any choices you’re not happy with. Upon completing the game in Survivor mode, you’ll be able to use Explorer mode to explore other routes.
Stealth
There are many stealth sections in Directive 8020, a new addition to the Dark Pictures series. This guide presumes you complete them all without being caught by your monstrous pursuers. Note, however, that if you are caught, if you’re carrying a wedge tool you can momentarily stun your attacker by completing a QTE, allowing you to escape.
Quick Time Events (QTEs)
Being a Dark Pictures game, there are of course lots of QTEs, or quick time events. This guide presumes that you complete them all, as failing them often leads to death. Go into the game’s settings if you want to make these QTEs more lenient.
Utility Strap
Another new feature of Directive 8020, the Utility Strap allows you to remotely activate some devices. Keep an eye out for places where it can be used and press the right trigger when prompted to use it. It’s particularly handy during stealth sections, where it can be used to create distractions.
Junction Boxes
As you explore the Cassiopeia in Directive 8020, keep an eye out for electricity symbols on the walls. These generally alert you to power junctions, which you can view with the scanner (activated by pressing Square/X) and then use to your advantage.
Wedge Tool
Once you get your hands on one, the wedge tool is invaluable in Directive 8020. Not only can you use it to defend yourself from attackers, it can also be used to unlock some doors. Stop the meter in the orange section once, or the grey sections multiple times to open a door with it.
Messaging System
There’s a messaging system in Directive 8020 that allows you to communicate with your fellow crew members. Press the Triangle/Y button to use it every once in a while. You don’t have to use it except in one or two scenarios, but it helps you to learn more about the crew and develop some traits.
Navigation
If you press ‘up’ on the d-pad, a marker will appear pointing towards your current objective. So if you’re ever unsure where you need to go, just press ‘up’.

- After going through the door, respond to Cernan’s message if you’d like, then push forward into the North Corridors. Enter the vent on the right when you see the life form ahead. When you leave the vent, use your wedge tool to open the door to Fuel Systems and go through.
- In the large room you’re now in, first head over to the left hand side and lower the ladder with your Utility Strap. Head up the ladder and interact with the panel on the wall ahead. Now go back down the ladder and make your way to the other end of the room, leaving via the door.
- Keep moving forward. Hop over the obstacle and squeeze through the gap. Go straight ahead and use your Utility Strap to activate the video. When you’ve done that, interact with the thing covering the entrance to the Reactor elevator and complete the button tap QTE events.
Character: Josef Cernan
- Turn around and head to the end of the corridor. On your left, in the wall, is a power junction. Use your scanner and divert power to the nearby door.

- Enter the room you’ve just opened and look through the window in there – there’s a panel you can activate with your Utility Strap to open some shutters at the far end. Leave the small room and enter the room via the now open window – there’s a data pad in here to investigate.
- Leave the room and squeeze through the gap to proceed. Keep moving ahead until you find the door to the Geoscience Lab – you need to find a power cell for it. Go down the corridor to the left and enter the small room at the end.
- Use your Utility Strap to open the gate, then climb onto the crates ahead. Move forward and you’ll find there’s a another gate you can open with your Utility Strap in the distance. Go back and drop from the crates. Go through the gate you just opened and grab the power cell.
- Return to the Geoscience Lab door and use the power cell to power it. Go inside and the life form will appear again – you need to sneak past it.
- Head left and quickly enter the room before the life form spots you. There’s a power junction in the wall here – use your scanner and divert the power to the right, even though it’s not active yet.
- Now hop over the obstruction and head to the window in this room. When the coast is clear, leave the room by hopping through the window and head left, following the walkway around to the door you need to go though. You’ll find it’s not powered up – you’re going to need to go downstairs to divert power to it.
- Drop down to the lower level via the broken railing near the door, being careful of avoiding the broken glass which will alert the life form. There’s a power junction box behind you.

- Use your scanner and interact with the junction box, diverting the power to another junction box in the area. Now make your way to that box using your scanner, avoiding the life form as you go. It’s to the left of the stairs on the lower level.
- Interact with the power junction and divert the power upwards to the power junction you activated earlier – the door you need will now be powered up. Make your way up the stairs and then head right, to the door – you’ll need to sue your wedge tool to open it.
- After going through the door, keep moving forward. After squeezing though a gap there’ll be a chase scene. Run down the corridor then head left at the end. Squeeze through the gap ahead and complete the button tap QTE to escape.

Character: Nolan Stafford
- First, turn around and investigate the data pad on the floor near the chairs. Now turn around again and head down the corridor, squeezing though the doors at the end.
- After the scene, you need to reach the elevator shaft while avoiding life form. Go forward and head down the stairs to the right. At the bottom, on your left, there’s a power junction in the wall. Use your scanner and interact with the junction, diverting the power to the right to unlock the Locker Room.

- Go to the Locker Room to your right and activate the Simms’ Recording in the wall. Leave the Locker Room and head right. Start making your way to the other end of the corridor, being careful of the life form ahead. Halfway down the corridor, you can remotely activate the panel on the left with your Utility Strap to cause a distraction, allowing you to slip by and reach the door ahead.
Character: Laura Eisele
- Go through the door ahead, and in the next room keep to the right hand side and move to the next door. A scene will trigger, and you’ll be left in the room with the life form.
- Sneak to the right when you can – as you move forward the life form will appear ahead of you. Backtrack a little, go around crates and head to where the life form just appeared from. Go left from this point and hop over an obstacle – on the right, near the door, you’ll find a power cell which you should pick up.
- Now keep moving around the edge of the room, avoiding the life form. After hopping over another obstacle you’ll find somewhere to use the power cell, opening a door which will allow you to get to the upper level.

- After going up the stairs, first head left to find a data pad on a chair. Then turn around and start making your way around the upper walkway, heading to the door at the opposite end of the room. Around the halfway mark you’ll be attacked – complete the QTE and then run to the door as fast as you can.
Character: Nolan Stafford
- Go straight down the corridor and enter the Colony Control room. In the room beyond there’s a console to interact with on the wall. Now head back the way you came and use your wedge tool to open the door to the Mess Hall.
- As you enter the Mess Hall the life form will appear. Sneak around the left edge of the room if you can, avoiding the life form as you go. Be particularly careful of the glass on the floor here. When you reach the door you need to go through for safety at other other end of the room, you’ll find it needs a power cell.
- Head to the corner of the room at the opposite side if the door. There’s a power junction in the wall near the door there – use your scanner and divert the power to that door. You then need to use your wedge tool to open it. Inside you’ll find the power cell you need.

- Now leave the small room and sneak across to the other side of the large room. By using the power junction again and diverting the power to the display monitor you can enable a handy distraction near the door. Place the power cell in the wall and go through the door to reach safety.
- After going down the stairs, head right down some more stairs, go through the door to Maintenance, and then go down the stairs in there. Head right, going to the back of the server racks to find another data pad to investigate. At the other end of the room, past the door, there’s a message console in the wall to interact with.
- Now go to the centre of the room and use the lever on the wall to purge the elevator. Leave the room going back up the stairs, then turn right at the top and open the Elevators door with your wedge tool. Go through the door and enter the elevator et the end.
- After the scene, move down the corridor. Before emerging into the large room at the end, grab the power cell from the wall and backtrack a little until you find a vent on the left – use the power cell to power it up. Enter the vent and head right until you emerge in a new area.
- Use the Utility Strap on the panel on the left to lower some nearby server racks. Now use use scanner and interact with the power junction that was behind them, diverting power to the door behind you.
- Enter the next room and look for a gap between the server racks where you can use your Utility Strap with the panel on the wall to lower them. Enter the area and interact with another power junction, diverting the power to the panel on your left. Use your Utility Strap on that panel to lower more server racks.

- Hop over the barrier on your left and squeeze through the gap ahead. Go right and crouch to get through the small opening. Use your utility strap to lower yet more server racks, and then use your scanner and activate another power junction ahead, diverting power to the server control panel on the left.
- Crawl back through the opening and use your Utility Strap to lower the server racks ahead of you remotely though the small gap. Head left and go through the door. Ahead of you is the last Simms’ Recording to activate on the wall. To the left of the recording you’ll find an Obol on the floor – this will enable O Death secrets which you’ll have to use Turning Points to discover.
- Open the nearby door with your wedge tool to get back to Eisele and continue. Head up the stairs to trigger a scene. There’s a button tap QTE which I believe you’ll always fail. Now you need to run away from the horrendous life form. Just follow Eisele and complete the QTEs along the way. Go through the vent at the end to escape.
Character: Laura Eisele

Well done, you’ve completed Directive 8020 and saved all crew members in the progress – hopefully you’ve found our walkthrough useful. There’s still work to do though. Use Explorer mode and track down the O Death secrets for a nice surprise.
O Death secret locations
Episode 8: Come True (Scene – The Way Back)
- You’ll already have this if you followed our walkthrough above, but if not, head down the corridor at the start of the scene and grab the power cell. Backtrack a little and use it to power the vent.
- Enter the vent and follow it around to the right. In the next area, use your Utility Strap to manipulate the server racks and your scanner to interact with the power junctions to progress, and you’ll eventually find a room with the last Simms’ Recording. The Obol is on the floor to the left of it.

Episode 1: Little Star (Scene – Medical)
- After gaining access to the Medical reception room, the O Death secret can be found laying on the floor surrounded by the console in the middle of the room. It’s a data pad.

Episode 3: The Sample (Scene – Search)
- When you reach the Mess Hall, the O Death secret is in the far corner of the room. Look for the power symbol on the wall – it’s the console to the right of that.

Episode 5: Mr. Williams (Scene – Radio Silence)
- At the start of this scene, go up the stairs and make your way down the corridor leading to the Cockpit – the O Death secret is on the left as you make your way down. It’s a panel in the wall.

- After using the elevator, progress forward until you see Cooper entering the Crew Lounge ahead. Instead of following her, head down the stairs to the right, had left down the corridor, then take the stairs up on the left ahead. The O Death secret is a data pad on some seating.
