Lou’s Lagoon walkthrough – Full story missions guide

Lou's Lagoon Key Art

If you’re playing Lou’s Lagoon, we’ve put together a walkthrough to help you out. While this cosy open world adventure has plenty of side quests and opportunities to explore, our guide focuses on the main missions. There’s a good reason for this: The game doesn’t always make it clear what is and isn’t compulsory. So by following our guide you can ensure you’re focusing on the key tasks of the game.

We do cover some side missions, because at times you will need to complete some in order to gain currency to access story tasks. It’s up to you if you want to follow our suggestions or go off and do your own thing at certain points. You can use this guide as a step-by-step walkthrough, or you can simply jump to a specific mission/chapter if you need help at a specific part. We’ve separated things out by mission, and while early game missions are short and sweet, later ones require a bit more work.

If you need more help with Lou’s Lagoon outside of our walkthrough, we’ve also put together a crafting guide, which will help you in finding key resources and what materials are need for crafting certain objects.

Lou’s Lagoon: Information about collecting materials

  • You’ll see a lot of material to collect as you move through the world. We’ve highlighted what you need at certain times, but it’s always wise to collect the key resources: driftwood and scrap. You can never have too much of either.
  • Be careful with picking up other items, though. There are so many resources to collect, but you won’t need some of them, and you have limited inventory space.
  • If you do run out of inventory space, you can move near your plane, access your inventory and transfer some to to your cargo hold. You’ll need to retrieve it from your cargo hold before you use it to craft, however.
  • You’ll gain expansions to your storage over time by completing missions and finding chests out in the world, so it does pay to explore and do some side quests along the way.
  • If you’re struggling to find a particular resource, check the shop. Sometimes it’s easier to buy than to scavenge.

Important notes before you play

  • Remember to save regularly! Lou’s Lagoon has a manual save function that can be accessed at any time from the main menu.
  • When you load a save, your progress will be retained, but your position won’t be – you’ll always start from the port of an island. So if you’ve just done a difficult traversal to a hard-to-reach place, you might want to finish what you were doing before saving and quitting!
  • There’s no fall damage in Lou’s Lagoon, so feel free to jump off high cliffs without a care in the world!
  • If you ever get stuck in the environment, head into the settings menu and choose “I am stuck!”. This will teleport you straight back to your plane. It’s also handy if you just quickly want to get to your plane!

A New Beginning

  • Talk to Hefti. He’s down at the broken pier on the beach. Look for the red mission marker on your minimap.
  • He’ll give you the ‘Swirler’, the tool you need to collect materials. You need to pick up 10 pieces of driftwood – it’s dotted along the beach. If you’re using a controller, hold down the right trigger to use the swirler.
  • Once you’ve got 10 pieces, go back to the pier and point your swirler at it. This time, use the left trigger to transfer the pieces of driftwood to fix the pier.

Your first real task is fixing the pier on Lou’s Island. Screenshot: GameSpew

Proper Propelling

  • From the pier, head east along the beach until you reach a cave. Go through the cave and out the other side, where you’ll find a box-headed character called Clip. Talk to them.

Rascal Rescue

  • You need to fix the broken raft so Clap can get back from the small island. Find 20 pieces of driftwood by exploring the beach.

How to defeat pirates/wolf enemies in Lou’s Lagoon

Lou's Lagoon pirate
Pirates are nuisances, but they can easily be dealt with. Screenshot: GameSpew

As you’re exploring the beach in Lou’s Lagoon you’ll occasionally come across pirates – dog/wolf-like enemies that throw blobs of black goo at you. They can’t hurt you; you can’t be knocked out at all. But if they hit you with the goo, you’ll temporarily be stunned.

To deal with the pirates, use your Swirler on them. Hold the right trigger while strafing out of the way to avoid their fire. After a few seconds, you’ll have defeated the pirates, gaining currency (called Shellings) in the process. They may also do a spinning attack if you get too close, so keep your distance when aiming your Swirler at them.

  • Once you’ve got enough driftwood, swim over to the island where Clap is stranded. Transfer the driftwood into the raft.

The Kids’ Hideout

  • Swim back to the mainland. Go into the cave you originally came out of, and to the right, you’ll find a doorway to Clip and Clap’s hideout. Talk to them.

Proper Propelling

  • Gather the propeller using the right trigger. Head back to the pier where the seaplane is.
  • Use the left trigger to transfer the propeller to the plane.

In the Market for a Microchip

Lou's Lagoon - Jackie
You can buy many items from Jackie. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Talk to Jackie – he runs a shop from the boat parked just to the side of the pier.
  • Choose to ‘trade’ with him, and buy the Microchip from the Shop side of the screen.
  • Put the microchip into the plane using the left trigger.

Fine Refining

  • We now need to use the Refinery for the first time – a machine that lets us craft higher-grade materials from what we already have.
Lou's Lagoon Refiner
The Refinery can be used to craft more advanced materials. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • You’ll find the Refinery just across the beach from the pier – a large green machine.
  • We need two pieces of Refined Metal. Each one needs 6 pieces of scrap, so we need to collect 12 pieces of scrap first. You’ll find it along the beach and nearby areas, so you won’t have to go far.
  • Once you’ve got enough scrap, go to the Refinery and choose Refined Metal. Click ‘craft’, then input ‘2’, then ‘craft’ again. You’ll have to wait a few seconds for the machine to work.
  • Pick up the crafted pieces using your Swirler – they will be on the floor near the machine.
  • Now, transfer the Refined Metal to the plane.

To Tanglebloom

  • You can now fly the plane for the first time! But first you need to take Refined Wood and Refined Metal with you to Tanglebloom.
  • To make Refined Wood, you need to input 3 pieces of driftwood into the Refiner. You’ll need 18 pieces of driftwood and 24 pieces of scrap.
  • Once you’ve got the resources, go to the Refinery and make 6 Refined Wood and 4 Refined Metal. You’ll need to do them one at a time – the machine can only process one job at once.
  • When you’re done crafting, Head to the plane and press square/X to get in.
  • Tanglebloom is to the south, but when you get in the plane you should be facing the right direction. If you need to invert the flying controls, you can do so in the game’s options menu.
  • When you get near Tanglebloom, don’t worry about landing: just press square/X when prompted.
Lou's Lagoon Mayor
Head up these stairs to get to the Mayor’s office. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • On the island, you’ll need to go up the stairs past a large log to find the Mayor. Go up another set of stairs, then another. At the top, turn left and you’ll find the Mayor’s Office. Go in.
  • Talk to Mayor Bubo.

Builder-in-Chief

  • Leave the Mayor’s office and make your way back down to the port.
  • Talk to Gondo – he’s the creature stood near your plane. Ask him to take you to Norleaf.
  • Once on Norleaf, you need to make your way up to the radio tower. It’s a bit of a puzzle to get up here! (Note: you’ll see a fair bit of scrap while you’re exploring Norleaf – take it! Scrap is always useful.)
  • From the boat, head straight forward and veer to the right through the undergrowth until you see the outline of some large plants.
Lou's Lagoon waterberries
Head towards the plant outlines, and use Waterberries to make them sprout. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • They require Waterberries to bloom, which you’ll find nearby. Move past them and veer slightly right and you’ll find a small pond with four blooms of Waterberries. Pick them up with your Swirler. Now, transfer the Waterberries to the plants to make them all bloom. Note that they only last a couple of minutes, so if you take too long to cross them, you’ll need to make them sprout again.
  • Find a ledge near the shortest plant and hop your way across.
Lou's Lagoon screenshot
Hope across the newly-spouted plants to reach the other side. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Once at the other side, move right and find a vine to climb up to reach a higher ledge.
  • Head forward and drop down a ledge – you’ll see the broken radio tower.
  • Talk to Bobster, the chap stood near the radio tower.

The Tanglebloom Radio Tower

  • Transfer 6 Refined Wood and 4 Refined Metal into the radio tower to repair it.

Return of the Gadgeteer

  • Head back to the boat – you can just drop down from here to find yourself back near the pier.
  • Talk to Gondo to go back to Tanglebloom Town.
  • From there, get in your plane and fly back to Lou’s Island – it’s right in the centre of the map, north from Tanglebloom.

A Tool for Building

  • You need to earn 800 Shellings to create the Builder tool. There are numerous ways you can earn Shellings as you play, including completing side quests, finding them on Pirates, opening chests and more. But right now, the quickest way to earn them is to sell materials.

How to earn money in Lou’s Lagoon

You’ll need to earn money – Shellings – not only for this mission, but several others throughout the game. There are four main ways to earn Shellings in Lou’s Lagoon:

  1. Selling items. Refined or crafted materials are worth more, so sometimes it can be worth collecting scrap/driftwood and then putting it through the Refinery before selling to get a higher return.
  2. Completing missions. Main missions and side missions will often reward you with Shellings. You can check on a mission’s reward by opening up your menu and tabbing across to the mission screen.
  3. Finding chests. Every island in Lou’s Lagoon has a number of chests, and these often contain Shellings.
  4. Defeating pirates. You don’t get a huge amount, but defeating a pirate will usually net you around 100 Shellings.
  • A Refined Metal is worth 75 Shellings. You likely already have around 250, but let’s assume you need 750 Shellings, so we’ll aim to make 10 Refined Metals. We’ll need 60 scrap, which should be easy to find by combing Lou’s Island beach.
  • When you’ve got enough, feed your scrap into the Refinery to change it into Refined Metal.
  • Head to Jackie’s Treasures to sell your Refined Metal.
  • With your 800 Shellings in tow, go talk to Fidge in the Lab.
Lou's Lagoon Fidge
You’ll need to go to Fidge in the Lab any time you want to upgrade a tool. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Choose ‘Shellings for the Builder?’ On the Upgrade menu, choose Builder 1.0 and press ‘upgrade’.
  • Now, go talk to Hefti down by the plane. Choose ‘Got the Builder!’.

What does the Builder tool do in Lou’s Lagoon?

As the name suggests, the Builder tool is for building! In Lou’s Lagoon, you have the option to build your own entire house alongside the story missions and the side quests, if you so want to. By using the Builder in a designated area of Lou’s Island (it’s marked out with rope next to the Lab) you can put down individual parts to create any building you can dream up.

Of course, you don’t have to do this, but for players who like to get creative, it’s a great addition. If you’re not interested in this creative side to Lou’s Lagoon, you’ll still need to use the Builder for one or two missions, so it’s not a completely wasted tool.

How to Manufacture a Manufacturer

  • We need to use the new Builder tool to make a Manufacturer.
  • To make a Manufacturer, we need a Dematerialization Core, which Hefti gave us, and 5x Refined Metal.
  • You can either gather more scrap (you’ll need 30 altogether) or you can earn some Shellings to buy some from Hefti.
  • Once you’ve got 5x Refined Metal, head to the fenced-off area of Lou’s Island – just next to the Refinery. This is your building area.
Lou's Lagoon building area
This fenced area is where you can freely build in Lou’s Lagoon. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Press ‘right’ on the d-pad to bring up the Builder menu. With the shoulder buttons, choose the ‘Crafting Stations’ menu, then use the left and right triggers to cycle to ‘Manufacturer’. Select it and choose where to place it within the fenced area.
  • Once it’s placed, go and talk to Fidge in the Lab. Select ‘Got a Manufacturer!’.

In Turbines We Thrust

  • We now need to craft 2x Thrust Bearings to repair the turbine on Lou’s Island.
  • To craft two Thrust Bearings, we need 2x Refined Metal and 6x Zananas.
  • The Refined Metal is easy enough – if you haven’t got any in your inventory, you’ll need 12 scrap, easily scavenged from Lou’s Island or Norleaf.
  • Zananas can also be found easily on Lou’s Island. But they’re on a higher part of the island, and easily reaching it means repairing a staircase. First, craft 8x Refined Wood at the Refinery. If you need more driftwood, you’ll find it along the beach.
  • Once you’ve got the Refined Wood, head East from the Lab. You’ll come across a staircase that needs repairing.
Lou's Lagoon broken staircase
You can repair this staircase with Refined Wood. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Add the missing wood and climb up. At the top of the stairs, climb up the vine straight in front of you, then climb up one more. Head right and you’ll see Zanana trees – they are slightly electrified palm trees.
Lou's Lagoon Zanana tree
This is a Zanana tree. Use your Swirler to get Zananas! Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Once you’ve got enough Refined Metal and Zananas, go to the Manufacturer. Choose Thrust Bearer, then craft two of them.
  • Now it’s time to climb to the Turbine. It’s on a cliff, just above the Lab. The easiest way to get to it is to climb up the ladder on the hut next to the Lab.
Lou's Lagoon turbine
To reach the turbine, start by climbing up this ladder. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • From there, make your way up the grassy platforms on top of the rocks. Remember you can double-jump by pressing X/A twice!
  • You’ll eventually reach a vine to climb to the turbine. At the top, input the Thrust Bearings into the turbine.

Using the job board in Lou’s Lagoon

Lou's Lagoon job board

Along with talking to characters to pick up side quests, you can also interact with the job board near the Lab on Lou’s Island. There isn’t always a job available, but it’s worth checking if you want something extra to do. They’re a good way of picking up extra Shellings and Spark Cores.

  • Go talk to Hefti down near the plane. Offer to go to Tanglebloom when prompted.

Gone With the Storm

  • Use your plane to fly to Tanglebloom – it’s the island directly south of where you are.
  • Talk to to Teslo – just to the right of the dock. Ask ‘Seen Lou around?’ when you get the option.
  • Walk across to Chef Capri – sitting just to the right of the steps. Ask ‘Seen Lou around?’. She says he went up the stairs.
  • Head up the stairs and talk to Skipp who’s right at the top. Ask him the same, and he says he was heading upwards.
  • Go up another set of stairs and talk to Weez at the top. He says Lou went up more stairs.
  • Following in Lou’s footsteps, go up the next set of stairs.
  • Move left until you find Pip. Ask them about Lou, and they’ll say he went down the stairs next to them.
Lou's Lagoon Pip
Talk to Pip then head down the stairs. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Go down the stairs and talk to Archie. Ask him about Lou. Go through the conversation, and he’ll prompt you to head to Norleaf.

Feast for the Kraken

  • Head back to the pier and go talk to Gondo. Ask him if he transported Lou. You can’t get to Norleaf just yet – you’ve got a Kraken to fight first.
  • Jump in your plane.
  • Fly east, towards the red marker (make sure you have the ‘Feast for the Kraken’ mission selected). You need to pick up a mountain vine fruit – they’re purple berries with yellow spots. When you get close to one, you’ll be prompted to press square/X to pick it up.
Lou's Lagoon
These are the mountain vine fruit – fly close and press square/X when you’re close to pick it up. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Once you’ve got a berry, head towards the next marker, to the southwest. It’s the Kraken – you need to fly very close to it, then press square/X to drop the mountain vine fruit.
Lou's Lagoon kraken
Drop the fruit right on the Kraken. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • If you hit the Kraken, you’ll get a short cutscene letting you know it got your fruit. It’s easy to miss, though, so make sure you’re flying very close to it before dropping.
  • Note: If you crash your plane while flying with the fruit, you’ll drop it and will need to pick up another.
  • Once you’ve hit it, repeat – you’ll need to land three berries on the Kraken altogether.
  • With the last berry dropped at the Kraken, return to Tanglebloom Town and talk to Gondo.

A Sign of Lou

  • Talk to Gondo again and have him take you to Norleaf.
  • Once you’re on Norleaf, from the boat, follow the beach around to the east. You’ll eventually reach a cave.
Lou's Lagoon Norleaf cave
This is the cave on Norleaf. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Enter the cave.
  • Make your way through, generally heading northeast. There are a few pirates in here, so either deal with them or simply avoid them.
  • You’ll eventually reach an Ancient Altar. Interact with it.
Lou's Lagoon screenshot
Interact with the Ancient Altar. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Choose ‘Inspect the glyphs’, then ‘Look at the book page’. Choose ‘Translate the inscription’.
  • After translating it, choose ‘Light and dark!’.
  • Once you’ve got the sigil, leave the cave. Head back to the boat and return to Tanglebloom Town.
  • Return to Archie (you’ll need to go up the island’s stairs to the top, then down another set). Talk to him.

Searching for the Wind Statue / Ride of Passage

  • We now need to go to a new island: Gleam Reef.
  • Get in your plane. Gleam Reef is to the north-north-east of the map.
  • On the island, talk to Cora. Before you can access the island and continue, you need a Glider. To get one, we’ll need to go back to Fidge on Lou’s Island.
  • You can fly to Lou’s Island, or go to the map screen, click on it and select Autopilot.
  • To make a Glider, we need 4x Bolstered Wood and 1,200 Shellings.
  • Before we can make Bolstered Wood at the Refinery, we need two things: more Spark Cores to unlock it, and an upgraded Swirler to be able to gather the required materials (Woodthorn, in this case). That means completing some side quests.
Lou's Lagoon Refinery
We need Bolstered Wood before we can continue. Screenshot: GameSpew

A Run-Down Harbor (side quest)

  • We recommend ‘A Run-Down Harbor’, which can be picked up by talking to Jackie in the shop on Lou’s Lagoon. You’ll need to deliver 8x Refined Stone to Tanglebloom Town. It’s made using Pebbles, which can be gathered from the tall mushroom-like trees in the cave on Lou’s Island.
  • Make the Refined Stone using the Refinery, then travel to Tanglebloom Town – you can fast travel from your map.
  • You’ll need to head to the pier at the back of Tanglebloom Town to deposit the Refined Stone and collect the reward.
Lou's Lagoon
Here’s where you need to transfer the Refined Stone. Screenshot: GameSpew

Tanglebloom Spring Clean (side quest)

  • There’s another easy side quest you can do while you’re in Tangletown. Talk to Linnie, down near the plane landing port, just outside the Lab. She’ll give you the ‘Tanglebloom Spring Clean’ task.
  • Around town there are nine tree trunks and knocked-over trash cans to pick up with your Swirler. Make sure you explore every level of the town, and be sure to check around hidden nooks and crannies around the beach.
  • Once you’ve got them all, return to Linnie – you’ll get Shellings as a reward.

Fabulous Fashion (side quest)

Lou's Lagoon Tammy
Talk to Tammy to pick up the Fabulous Fashion quest. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • While on Tanglebloom, talk to Tammy. She needs to get her fashion store back up and running, but she needs 10x Refined Wood and 6x Refined Metal to help her out.
  • Head back to Lou’s Island. If you haven’t already got enough, you should find enough scrap and driftwood around the beach to craft these (you’ll need 30 driftwood and 36 scrap).
  • When you’ve crafted the materials in the Refinery, go back to Tanglebloom to transfer the items to Tammy’s shop.

Stranger Stranding (side quest)

Lou's Lagoon Wilson
Talk to Wilson to pick up the Stranger Stranding quest. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Back on Lou’s Island, talk to Wilson. He’s stood between the plane pier and Jackie’s Treasures. He’ll give you the ‘Stranger Stranding’ quest, for which he needs 2x Thrust Bearings and 10x Refined Wood.
  • You’ll need 30x driftwood to make Refined Wood using the Refinery.
  • Thrust Bearings can be made at the Manufacturer. You’ll need 6x Zanana and 2x Refined Metal for these.
  • When you’ve got the materials, head to the small island to the south of Lou’s Island – you can swim from the beach. You’ll see it from the plume of smoke rising up.
Lou's Lagoon Stranger Stranding

  • Transfer the materials into the broken boat.

The Famous Zanana Curry (side quest)

  • Talk to Granny – she’s just outside of the Lab. Tell her ‘The kids are hungry!’.
  • She needs 20x Zananas and 20x Heartberries. You’ll be able to find everything on Lou’s Island. Head higher onto the island – Zananas are on electrified palm trees, and Heartberries are on heart-shaped bushes.
Lou's Lagoon Heartberry
Here’s what Heartberries look like. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • When you’ve found everything, return to Granny and talk to her. Tell her you’ve got the ingredients.

How to upgrade your Swirler in Lou’s Lagoon

  • Talk to Fidge to upgrade your tools, including the Swirler. To unlock Swirler 2.0 we need 4,250 Shellings and 8x Magnetic Pulse Bolts.
  • Magnetic Pulse Bolts can be made at the Manufacturer: you’ll need to unlock them with 2x Spark Cores. You’ll have plenty if you’ve followed our suggested side quests
  • Each Magnetic Pulse Bolt requires 2x Refined Metal, so we’ll need 16 altogether. That means 96 pieces of scrap. Remember, there’s plenty of scrap on Lou’s Island beach – but if you’re short, Norleaf has plenty too. You can also buy some from Jackie – but considering we need 4,250 Shellings, you should probably avoid spending at this point.
  • When you’ve got enough scrap, use the Refinery to make 16x Refined Metal.
  • Go to the Manufacturer and make 8x Magnetic Pulse Bolts. They take a while!
  • Now, just the Shellings to go. If you still need some, it’s a good idea to sell some products to Jackie. We had an abundance of scrap, so we made Refined Wood to sell. Refined Metal is worth more, or you could also make Thrust Bearings to sell.
  • Once you’ve got 4,250 Shellings, head to Fidge, select ‘Need gadgets!’ and choose Swirler 2.0.
  • Once you’ve got Swirler 2.0, you can collect Woodthorn in order to be able to craft Bolstered Wood.
  • Woodthorn can be found across Lou’s Island – check the higher, grassy parts of the island. You’re looking for a small, conical-shaped plant.
Lou's Lagoon Woodthorn
Here’s what a Woodthorn looks like. There are plenty on Lou’s Island. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • We need 4x Bolstered Wood, which means a total of 12x Refined Wood (made with a total of 36x driftwood) and 12x Woodthorn.
  • When you’ve got enough, head to the Refinery and make 4x Bolstered Wood.
  • Before we can make the Glider, we also need 1200 Shellings. As before, look to sell valuable items to Jackie. Now you’ve got a level 2 Swirler, you can collect the Heavy Ore inside the cave on Lou’s Island – this is worth 100 each.
  • Once you’ve got enough, go to Fidge, ask for gadgets, and choose Glider 1.0.

How to use the Glider in Lou’s Lagoon

Once you’ve unlocked the Glider, you can use it to ride jets of air and also glide across gaps. Simply jump in an upwards jet of air and you’ll automatically pull out your glider. To glide across a gap, double-jump and press square/X to activate your glider.

  • Now, time to return to Gleam Reef. Since we haven’t unlocked fast travel here yet, we’ll need to use the plane. It’s in the north-north-east area of the map.
  • Once you reach Gleam Reef, you can now jump into the air jet to float upwards to reach the rest of the island.
  • At the top, your movement will be limited by black goo. Move forward until you’re in reach of the Goo Peal. Use your Swirler to pull it, which will remove the goo.
Lou's Lagoon Gleam Reef

  • Drop down from the ledge you’re on onto the beach below. Make your way northwest until you see a stone path leading to a settlement. Walk along, heading north, until you see a pulsating pad on the ground that requires a Groove Herb. Luckily, there’s a Groove Herb plant just to the side of it.

Here’s what a Groove Herb looks like. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Grab the Groove Herb, but don’t use it on this pad. You’ll need it in a minute. Grab any other Groove Herbs you find as you explore, too – they always come in handy.
  • Keep moving forward, and you’ll see another pulsating pad that is already activated.
  • Ride this one up to reach the statue. Climb the vine and interact with the statue. Choose to inspect the socket.

Bad Omen

  • Drop down, and head in a northerly direction until you reach a small cove. You’ll find a pulsating pad here – use a Groove Herb on it and ride upwards.

  • At the top, you’ll find a Goo Pearl you can pull to clear some of the island’s goo.
  • Head slightly north and drop down onto the platform below. You’ll find Lou’s plane stuck in a tree!

  • Look up at the plane and interact with it.

An Ominous Trail

  • You’ll see footprints on the ground where you’re stood.

  • Go back to where you found Lou’s plane. Nearby is a vine you can climb up. Head upwards, and move in a northwest direction until you find another pulsating pad. Use a Groove Herb on it and float upwards.
  • At the top is a Goo Pearl to remove, clearing some more goo.
  • Jump down, and now swim across the lake. At the other side, move in a southern direction. You’ll eventually find another goo pearl – get rid of this.

Getting rid of this Goo Pearl will clear the way to the door below. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • This one has cleared the goo blocking the door we followed the footprints to!
  • Drop down and interact with the door. Choose ‘Inspect the gate’.

The Voice of Wind

  • Make your way back to the main settlement of the island, right where you started (Tip: an easy way is to head into your settings menu and choose “I am stuck!”. This will teleport you back to your plane.)
  • Find the house just east of the platform you jumped down on when first accessing the island. It’s this one:
Lou's Lagoon Scypho's house
This is Scypho’s house. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Go inside, and talk to Scypho. Ask him ‘Get into the cave?’. Choose ‘Into the storm!’ when prompted.
  • You need to fly directly into the storm to get a recording of it, so head back into your plane.
  • The storm is to the south, and looks like a huge hurricane – you can’t miss it.

Against your better judgement, fly into this storm… Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Fly your plane directly into the centre of it.
  • After a few seconds, a text box will pop up confirming you got the recording. Fly back north and land on Gleam Reef.
  • Once on the island, make your way back to the wind door. Interact with it, and choose ‘insert the cassette’.

Into the Pirates’ Den

  • Enter the now-open door and make your way into the cave.
  • Make your way along the wooden walkways. Once you reach the end, drop down and cross the rope bridge.

  • After crossing the bridge, go to open the chest. You’ll be locked in and ambushed by pirates. Defeat them to continue. Make sure you actually do open the chest when you can – it contains 3,000 Shellings!
  • Keep making your way along the wooden walkway. You’ll eventually encounter a larger pirate by the name of Bartholomew. Go through the dialogue with him.
  • After talking with him, you’ll need to fight two regular pirates.
  • Once they’re defeated, look around to find a book perched on a wooden platform. Interact with it.

Completing Gleam Reef side missions

Note: Before you leave Gleam Reef, it might be worthwhile to spend some time exploring and completing side quests. Several here simply require you to save people from the goo – so explore and remove any Goo Pearls that you haven’t already. You’ll need the Spark Cores you’ll earn as rewards later on, so it makes sense to do them now to save you coming back later on.

These are the side quests you can do here, all without any crafting involved:

  • All Goo and No Chill
  • Smoke on the Horizon
  • Goo Yard
  • Herbs to Get the Groove On (Scypho)
  • Stuck in the Goo
  • Fresh Water
  • Pirates!
  • They Don’t See Me Rollin’
  • An Inconspicuous Delivery (return to Scypho’s house after clearing all the goo on the island)

The Quest for the Wave Statue

  • It’s time to travel to a new island, but before we do that, we need a new tool: the Scooper.
  • Travel back to Lou’s Island. Remember you can fast travel (you’ll need to leave the cave first).
  • To make the Scooper, you’ll need 1500 Shellings – which you should have easily earned over the last few missions – and 4x Thrust Bearings, for which you’ll need 4x Refined Metal and 12x Zanana. Make them at the Manufacturer.
  • Once you’ve got the materials, go talk to Fidge. Select ‘Need gadgets’ and choose the Scooper 1.0.

How to use the Scooper in Lou’s Lagoon

The Scooper is one of four tools you will unlock over the course of playing Lou’s Lagoon. This particular tool is very handy as it lets you find and grab objects out of sight, buried underground. Press ‘down’ on the d-pad and it will illuminate any objects within range. You can then press your right trigger when close to them to grab them with your main Swirler tool.

  • Get in your plane and fly to Boulderia – it’s northwest.
  • Once on the new island, head straight forward to find a door.
Lou's Lagoon Boulderia
When you land on Boulderia, look for this door. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Try to enter it. Say ‘Hello?’.
  • You’ll then be in conversation with a creature called Brakka. Ask him about the wave statue. Talk to him again and ask why it’s dark through the door.

Where Sunshine?

  • Move east, and follow the swirl of the island, gradually ascending upwards.
  • Once you reach a fallen log, press ‘down’ to use your Swirler. You’ll see a network of pipes highlighted underground and, within it, you should see a ball-shaped object. Use your Swirler to pull it out.
Lou's Lagoon Scooper
Look for the highlighted round ball by using the Scooper (press down on your d-pad). Screenshot: GameSpew
  • This will release a jet of water just ahead.
  • Ride the jet upwards and you’ll see a small building with a goo pearl on top of it. Pull it out using the Swirler. This will light up the cave you previously tried to enter.

Inside Gorplin

  • You’ll have been transported back to the bottom of the island, near the door. Go through it.
  • Once inside, make your way north to a small settlement of buildings. Find Bram sat on a barrel near a bar. Talk to him.

Here’s where you’ll find Bram. Screenshot: GameSpew

Soaked Burgers

  • The island is flooded and so you need… burgers? Alright then.
  • Find Brok, who is inside a restaurant just east of where you are. Talk to him, and ask him about burgers.
Brok Lou's Lagoon
You’ll find Brok inside the restaraunt. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • We need to fix a leak inside the restaurant, for which we need Beever Oil. Make your way back outside the cave and head upwards on the island until you encounter a Beever.
Lou's Lagoon Beever
Here’s what Beevers look like. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Use your Swirler on it to get Beever Oil. You need 16x Beever Oil to fix the leak, so encountering three Beevers should be enough. There’s also some inside the cave if you’re struggling.
  • Go back to Brok’s restaurant and locate the leak above your head. Transfer the Beever Oil to fix it, then talk to Brok again. Tell him you’ve repaired the pipes. He’ll give you the burgers.

The Greatest Sacrifice

  • Leave the cave.
  • Head northeast, where you’ll find a small boat. Transfer the burgers onto the boat, and then watch a short cutscene.

Powerless

Lou's Lagoon Bree
Here’s where you’ll find Bree. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Jump down a ledge to the south and find a creature called Bree. Talk to them, and tell them Brakka sent you.
  • You need to find Generator Parts. You’ll need to use the Scooper to find them. For us, both Generator Parts were close to the Radio Tower, so head near there and press ‘down’. You’re looking for a box-like outline in purple appearing.
Lou's Lagoon Generator Parts
Here’s what the Generator Parts look like when using the Scooper. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • When you’ve got both parts, make your way to the generator – back near Bree – and transfer the two parts across.
  • Head up the island to find Brakka. Talk to him, and tell him the power is back.

Completing Boulderia side missions

The next main mission requires a lot of crafting, and for that we need Spark Cores to be able to unlock the materials we need. That means completing side missions. There are several you can complete on Boulderia fairly easily, so we’d recommend doing these now before moving on. The missions you can complete that reward you with Spark Cores are as follows:

  • Hot Sawdust
  • Between a Rock and a Sugarcrystal/The Sugarcrystal is Cast
  • Sugar Cubes

Heat up the Chains

  • Essentially, we just need three Power Sources to complete this next task, but crafting them will involve a fair bit of legwork.

How to make a Power Source in Lou’s Lagoon

Power Sources can be made in the Manufacturer tool. We need 1x Energy Pearl and 2x Pulsanite.

Energy Pearls are made in the Refinery with 1x Goo Pearl, 6x Zanana and 1x Microchip.

Pulsanite is made in the Refinery with 2x Pulsitium and 4x Heavy Ore.

You’ll also need multiple Spark Cores to unlock the required items within the Manufacturer and the Refinery.

  • Phew. Let’s go back to Lou’s Island and take stock.
  • To unlock everything down to Pulsanite in the Refinery and Power Source in the Manufacturer, we calculate you need 29 Spark Cores. If you’ve completed all the side quests we suggested in Gleam Reef and Boulderia, you should have enough. If you’re still short, we recommend picking up ‘The Grand Opening’ from Tanglebloom Town, which requires a bit of basic crafting.
  • Let’s start with making the Energy Pearls. We need three altogether, which means we need 3x Goo Pearl, 18x Zanana and 3x Microchips.
  • You should have Goo Pearls in your inventory after clearing all the goo on Gleam Reef, and Zananas are easy to find on Lou’s Island.
  • Microchips are where things get a little trickier. To make a microchip, you need 4x Circuitry and 1x Bronze Scale.
  • You’ll find Circuitry on Norleaf. Fast travel to the island and use your Scooper. We found some right off the boat – they look like old-fashioned PCs.
Lou's Lagoon circuitry
This is what Circuitry looks like. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • To get Bronze Scales, you’ll first need a Fishing Rod. Thankfully, this only costs 1,500 Shellings, which you should easily have after completing missions thus far. Go to Fidge on Lou’s Island to buy it.
  • Use your fishing rod in any body of water to catch a fish that gives you Bronze Scales.

How to use your Fishing Rod in Lou’s Lagoon

  • You can buy the fishing rod from Fidge in the Lab on Lou’s Island for 1,500 Shellings.
  • To use it, press ‘left’ on the d-pad to equip it. Approach a body of water and press and hold the right trigger to deploy it.

Press the right trigger to attract fish.Screenshot: GameSpew
  • You will likely be able to see fish approaching; if there are none, press circle/B to retract your rod and try again in a different spot.
  • If a fish is nearby, keep pressing the right trigger to wiggle your rod and attract fish.
  • Once you’ve got hold of one, keep hold of R2. When the fish pulls on the rod, pull in the opposite direction with your thumbstick to reel it in.
  • You should now have enough materials to go to the Manufacturer and make 3x Microchips.
  • Once you’ve crafted the Microchips, you can then make 3x Energy Pearls at the Refinery.
  • Next up is 6x Pulsanite. To make these, we need 24x Heavy Ore and 12x Pulsitium.
  • You can find Heavy Ore in the cave on Lou’s Island. If you need Pulsitium, there’s plenty on Gleam Reef – look for the pink bowl-shaped coral growths.
  • Once you’ve got everything, craft 6x Pulsanite at the Refinery.
  • Almost there! Head to the Manufacturer and craft 3x Power Sources.
  • Now you’ve got them, jump in your plane and fly back to Boulderia.
  • There’s a bit of platforming involved in placing the power sources.
  • The first, the laser near Brakka is the easiest. Simply make your way up the island and the laser will be right in front of you.

  • The second, the laser on the balloon, requires a bit of platforming. First, make your way to a platform to the north of the island. Grab some nearby Sugarcrystals before climbing up onto it.
  • Glide from platform onto the floating construction below.
Lou's Lagoon balloon laser
Float from here to reach an island below, then build the ladder with Sugarcrystals. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Use the Sugarcrystals to build the ladder, then climb it. Climb one more ladder, then climb a pile of boxes, glide to another platform, then climb up a vine. There’s one more ladder to climb, and another gap to glide across before you reach the laser.
  • Finally, the laser on the boat looks to be the trickiest, but there’s actually a simple hack for this one. Swim out to the location of the boat, then simply wait for the nearby platform to lower into the water. Swim on top of it, and it’ll lift you up, allowing you to glide onto the boat and reach the laser.

Note this point on the map: swim over the moving platform to be lifted up, so you can glide onto the boat. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Once you’ve got them all, go talk to Brakka. He’s still near the top of the island. Tell him the chains are glowing.

Boulderia Unchained

  • This bit is nice and easy! Jump in your plane and fly into the three chains. If the mission is selected, the chains will be highlighted on your minimap, though they should be easily visible. You don’t need to do anything special: just literally fly straight into them. (Note: Don’t press square/X even if it’s highlighted – because you’re close to the island, you’ll be prompted to land, so ignore the button prompt.)
  • Once you’ve got all three chains, land back on Boulderia.
  • Head inside the cave and go find Bram in the settlement – he’s still sat on the pile of boxes. Tell him ‘Water level is down!’.

The Path to Illumination

  • Head north from Bram and jump down into a cavernous space. You’ll see a generator ahead.
Lou's Lagoon generator
Before you use the generator, you’ll need to find 2x Generator Parts. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Before you can use it, it needs 2x Generator Parts. Use your Scooper (press ‘down’ on the d-pad) to find them in the vicinity. We found one close to the generator, another we had to climb a few vines to reach.
Lou's Lagoon Generator Parts
Here’s what the Generator Parts look like. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Put the Generator Parts in the generator.
  • Now it’s time for some platforming. We need to reach the very top of the cave, and you’ll need to use a series of lifts and minecarts to get there.
  • You need to head for a platform near the centre of the cave, from where you can glide into the illuminated globe.
Lou's Lagoon
This is where you need to get to in Boulderia. Aim for the platform on the left, then glide over to the illuminated globe. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • Once inside the globe, talk to Grim. Go through the dialogue options and he’ll give you a Wave Cassette.

Rising From the Waves

  • Leave the cave and head to the north side of the island, on the beach. You’re looking for a boombox.
  • If you look at the map, it’s to the right of the “crab’s head”.
  • Put the cassette in the boombox.
  • Swim over to the crab that appears. Climb on its back and interact with the Wave Statue. Go through the dialogue options and ask for Wave’s help.
  • Get into your plane. Shortly after taking off, you’ll be interrupted by a message that pirates are attacking.
  • Fly north until you reach a group of airships. After a cutscene, you’ll need to fight back using Goo Pearls.
  • As you did before with the Kraken, pick up Goo Pearls using square/X. Fly above each airship and press square/X to release the Goo Pearl.
  • You’ll be flying in the storm, so might have to fight against your controls a little. As long as you’re above an airship when dropping Goo Pearls, you should make contact. There are four to hit altogether.

Where Light and Dark Embrace

  • Once you’ve hit all four airships, you’ll be prompted to travel to the Island of Soussom via Tanglebloom Town. But before we can get there, we need a Swirler 3.0 upgrade. Head to Lou’s Island.
  • To get the Swirler 3.0 we need 8x Dematerialization Cores and 20,000 Shellings.
  • You should have enough money if you haven’t been spending it. So all we need to do is make the Dematerialization Cores.

How to get the Swirler 3.0 upgrade in Lou’s Island

Lou's Lagoon Swirler 3.0

To make a Swirler 3.0, you need 8x Dematerialization Cores and 20,000 Shellings.

To make a Dematerialization Core, you need to add 1x Void Fragment and 2x Refined Metal to the Manufacturer. For eight of them, then, we need 8x Void Fragments and 16x Refined Metal.

The Refined Metal is easy: you’ll need 96 scrap, and Refined Metal can be crafted in the Refinery.

To make a Void Fragment, we need 2x Heavy Ore and 1x Gold Potato. For eight of them, we need 16x Heavy Ore and 8x Gold Potato. Both of these items can be easily found on Lou’s Island: Heavy Ore is in the cave, and Gold Potatoes can be found on the beach using the Scooper.

Once you’ve got those, head to the Manufacturer and craft 8x Dematerialization Cores. Then, you can head to Fidge at the Lab to craft the Swirler 3.0.

  • Once you’ve got the Swirler upgrade, travel to Tanglebloom Town. From the plane jetty, head east to the beach and follow the coast. You’ll eventually reach a door in the rocks.
Lou's Lagoon

  • Go through. Once on the other side, follow the corridor around until you reach a bricked-up doorway. Use your Swirler to bring it down.

  • Go through into a cave, and follow it around until you reach a wind door. It should automatically open. Go through and make your way to a door at the other side of the next area.
  • This will bring you out onto Soussom. Walk out of the cave to trigger a cutscene.
  • From the cave, head right and go up a staircase.

  • From here, climb up a vine, and keep making your way around the platform edge, eventually ending up at the top. From there, you’ll see a pirate encampment that you can glide down into.
Lou's Lagoon pirate encampment
Head down into the pirate encampment. Screenshot: GameSpew
  • After the cutscene, be prepared to fight against pirates. You’ll need to fight a larger pirate, who will eventually protect itself with a bubble.
  • The bubble requires 30x Goo Pearls to be thrown at it. Annoyingly, if you already have Goo Pearls in your inventory, you can’t use them. You’ll have to gather 30 by fighting pirates right here. It can get a bit hectic, but don’t worry if you get knocked down – you can’t die.
  • Once you’ve fed 30x Goo Pearls into the large pirate’s protective bubble, you’ll need to fight him one more time.
  • Once you’ve defeated him, enjoy the conversation with Lou.
  • Interact with the large statue behind Lou. Insert the Sigil of Light and Dark, then insert the Wind Sigil and the Wave Sigil.

  • After the cutscene, talk to Lou and choose to go back to Lou’s Island. Go through the dialogue.

That’s it, you’ve finished Lou’s Lagoon, and we hope you found our walkthrough helpful. Your journey doesn’t have to end here, though. There are more side quests to complete, radio towers to build, treasure chests to collect and a whole lot of crafting to play around with if you so wish. Have fun finishing up!
