Moomin: Midsummer Madness is coming to PC and Switch later this year

Yesterday was Moomin’s Day, and to celebrate, a brand new Moomins game was announced. Unlike Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth and Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, this one isn’t coming from Hyper Games. Instead, Moomin: Midsummer Madness is being developed by Crossbridge Game Studios and published by Shochiku. And rather than being a cosy adventure game, it’s more of a point and click puzzle game.
While we’re a little apprehensive about a different studio taking on the Moomin franchise after Hyper Games did such a wonderful job, if the images and trailer are anything to go by, Midsummer Madness promises to be just as magical. It looks stunning, remaining faithful to the art style of the 1990s TV series and the original book illustrations.
While the previous Moomin games have been original stories based inside the franchise, Moomin: Midsummer Madness is based on Tove Jansson’s 1954 Moominsummer Madness book. A flood engulfs the Moominvalley, and taking on the role of Moomintroll and the rest of the Moomin family, you’ll need to explore a strange, flooded landscape. The game centres around a now-floating theatre, where you’ll spend your time solving light puzzles.

It doesn’t sound like Moomin: Midsummer Madness is going to be a particularly taxing point-and-click adventure. The focus here is on fun and relaxation, with the game intended to be accessible to all ability levels. There’s a built-in hint system if you do get stuck, too.
With a name like Midsummer Madness, a summer release would have made more sense. But we’ll have to wait a little while longer before we can get our hands on this latest Moomin adventure. It’s set to release in Q4 of this year, so we’re expecting a release between October and December. Who says Midsummer can’t be at Christmas?
Moomin: Midsummer Madness is coming to PC, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
