A Tower Full of Cats is more than your average hidden cats game

It is no secret that I’m rather fond of a hidden cats game. It’s one of my favourite type of games to unwind with: I’ll put on an audiobook and completely switch off while I hunt down cats in a random, whimsical environment. A Tower Full of Cats is the latest of this type of game to land on console – but with the addition of a few other lighter puzzles, it’s slightly more than your average hidden cats game.
There are plenty of hidden cats to find, of course. But to access new areas you might have to first complete a particular activity – be it finding five hidden scrolls or hunting down a key to open a door. As the name suggests, A Tower Full of Cats has you moving up a tower, which it divided into four distinct sections. But there are indoor areas too, so you’ll also be searching caves, taverns and a whole lot more to hunt down those pesky cats.
There’s a handy hint system to help you out if you can’t find a cat, but it’s no use for finding the extra objects in the game. Every area has a set number of cats along with screws and bolts – but if you’re struggling to find that last screw, you’re out of luck. Same goes for the missions required to access a new area. One had me hunting down cats dressed as bats; I couldn’t find the last one, which put a halt to my progress for a while.
Still, I appreciate the additional challenge, and the design of A Tower Full of Cats means it remains interesting to play, even when you’re hundreds of cats deep. The different sections of the tower each have their own time period, and so you’ll move from prehistoric times to an Ancient Egyptian section, Ancient Rome and then Medieval times. They’re all tied together with a pleasant line art style, with cats cleverly hidden in the environment – some more obviously than others.
Is it quite as good as the Hidden Cats in… series? Maybe not, but A Tower Full of Cats is still a worthy addition to the genre, and a game I’m going to be determined to hunt down every last cat in. And for just £4.99, it’s a few hours of good, relaxing fun. If you’re a cat lover and enjoy casual games, what more could you possibly want?
A Tower Full of Cats is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.
