Games to watch out for this September

Happy ‘ber months, everyone! As the days get shorter and the weather gets a little cooler, it’s the perfect time to get cosy on the couch with a video game. Thankfully, the September games release calendar has plenty for you to look forward to. It’s another busy month, but that means there should be something for everyone.

We’ve got indie adventures, horror games, racing games, family-friendly platformers and epic RPGs, and just about everything in between. As always, our games to watch out for in September isn’t an exhaustive list of everything out this month, but these are the games we’re most excited for. You’ll find coverage of everything here – and a whole lot more – on GameSpew across September, so be sure to stay tuned for our daily coverage.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault

After a year in early access, Moonlighter 2 is launching into version 1.0 on PC, and will also be accompanied by a console release. As we found out when we played the early access version, it’s very different from the first Moonlighter, but that’s no bad thing. This feels like a reimagining of the same concept rather than a sequel, with the roguelike adventuring getting an overhaul and the way you manage your shop feeling better than ever.

Marsupilami 2 – Salsa Palombia

When we previewed Marsupilami 2: Salsa Palombia, we called it “colourful and moreish”. And, really, what more could you want from a family-friendly platforming game? You don’t need to have played the first Marsupilami to enjoy this, but if you have, you’ll already have a taste of what to expect. Loveable protagonists, fun and varied levels, plenty of collectibles, and a whole lot more.

Orbitals

If you’re a fan of It Takes Two and Split Fiction, then you’re going to be very keen to get your hands on Orbitals. In the same vein as Hazelight Studio’s games, Orbitals can only be played in co-op. With a gorgeous art style reminiscent of 90s anime, it tells the story of two young adults living aboard a space ship. Exclusive to Switch 2, you can play locally with another on the same device, or use the free Friend Pass to play with a friend online.

The Blood of Dawnwalker

We’ve already put some hours into The Blood of Dawnwalker, and we’ve said it might just be one of the year’s best games. The first game from Rebel Wolves, a studio made up of CD Project Red veterans, its Witcher 3 DNA is clearly visible. But with a unique world in which you’re cast as a newly-turned vampire, with just 30 days to save your family from a terrible fate, it’s something rather different from anything we’ve played before.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC

Onimusha: Way of the Sword might not be Capcom’s best game of the year (Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata are hard to beat), but it’s still another success for the developer. In our review, we praised the game’s excellent combat and its gorgeous visuals, along with the huge amount of content for those who want to savour it. Whether you’re a fan of the Onimusha franchise or simply want a new action/adventure game steeped in Japanese history, ensure this is on your radar.

NBA 2K27

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC

If you’ve paid for the Deluxe or Ultra edition, then you’ve undoubtedly already got stuck into NBA 2K27. But for everyone else, it releases on Friday 4th September. As always, you’ll have a career mode to dive into, along with additional modes to eke out more fun, including MyPlayers which lets you enjoy basketball out on city courts and in the park.

Halloween: The Game

Halloween: The Game lets you become Michael Myers, stalking the streets of Haddonfield to find unfortunate victims. Alternatively, you can play as a survivor, trying to alert the authorities while defending yourself with anything you can get your hands on. Asymmetrical multiplayer isn’t the only thing that Halloween: The Game has to offer, either, with a single player story letting you get immersed in The Night He Came Home. Needless to say, if you’re a fan of the franchise, Halloween: The Game is something to be excited about.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC

If you enjoyed either of the Hot Wheels Unleashed games, you ought to have Hot Wheels Infinite Rush on your radar if it isn’t already. You see, it’s from the same developer, Milestone, so while it’s set to offer quite a different experience, the core of it should be somewhat familiar. The main difference here is that instead of simply having a selection of tracks for you to race round, it’s got multiple open world areas that you can easily move between. Imagine something like Forza Horizon but with Hot Wheels, then, and you should have an idea of what to expect. And it sounds great to us. 

Marvel’s Wolverine

After succeeding in making blockbuster titles starring Spider-Man, Insomniac Games is now trying its hand at Wolverine. Don’t expect an open world experience here, though. Instead, Marvel’s Wolverine is a straight-up action game full of  thrilling set-pieces and smaller, more contained environments. And yes, it’s also very violent, with Wolverine, played by Spartacus star Liam McIntyre, able to slice and dice his opponents. Needless to say, as action game fans we’re very much looking forward to this one.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC

We’ve been waiting a long time for a new Walking Dead game, and we’re finally getting one! It’s not quite what we had in mind, though: Streets of Survival is a beat ’em up, with players taking control of Rick, Michonne, Daryl or Negan as they fight against human and zombie threats. With each character having signature weapon attacks and devastating combos to unleash, it promises to be a good time.

Graveyard Keeper 2

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC

If you like your farming simulators with a spooky slant, then Graveyard Keeper 2 is for you. The first Graveyard Keeper, which released in 2018, was described as “Shady Medieval Enterprise Simulator” by us, going by the fact that you spend your time burying the dead and gathering resources to use to make more money. It’s comparable to Stardew Valley, if everyone in Stardew Valley died and you were left to try and make money by dealing with their corpses.

Silent Hill: Townfall

• PS5 and PC

Konami has really been treating us lately with new Silent Hill games. But from developer Screen Burn – the team behind Observation and Stories Untold – Silent Hill Townfall promises to be something rather different. Set on the eerie island of St. Amelia, it seems unquestionably British, and we can’t wait to uncover the many mysteries of this strange isle and its protagonist.

Control Resonant

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC

The next game from Remedy, we have high hopes for Control Resonant. After all, the original Control was rather brilliant. It looks quite different, though, with melee combat being the focus here rather than gunplay. And with that comes a new protagonist, too. Playing as Dylan Faden, you’ll explore a warped version of Manhattan that’s on the brink of annihilation. The question is, can you save humanity and overcome a cosmic threat? We’re eager to try.

TOEM 2

• 29th September
• PS5, Switch and PC

We’re not sure how it’s five years since the first TOEM released. But it is; a whole half decade ago. Thankfully, a sequel is just around the corner, and so we can expect more quirky puzzling, taking photos and exploring a twee black-and-white world. In our review of TOEM, we said it “delivered heart by the truckload”, and we’re expecting more of the same in TOEM 2.

Minecraft Dungeons II

• PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC

The first Minecraft Dungeons felt a little like Diablo For Beginners, which, if you’re a fan of action-RPGs, is no bad thing. It was the perfect introduction to the genre, and something that the whole family could play together. It seems like Minecraft Dungeons II will be offering more of the same, with all new environments, new enemies and a new story to uncover. If you enjoyed the first, then, this one seems like a no-brainer.
