Man of Honor is a solid reason to return to Mafia: The Old Country

It’s been just over a year since the release of Mafia: The Old Country, and if you’re after a reason to return to the title, it’s just arrived. The Man of Honor expansion puts you back in control of Enzo, offering two new story chapters taking place during his early days as a made man. It doesn’t have much of an impact on the greater story, then, but if you want to spend more time with Enzo and his acquaintances, it’s well worth a play.

Jump into Man of Honor, and you’ll find yourself working alongside Ennio Salieri for a short while. You might recognise that name if you’re a fan of the series, as he’s the main antagonist of the original Mafia. He’s just been released from prison and wants to get revenge on some men who have crossed him. It means him making a decent sum of money in the process, too, which is handy seeing as he wishes to move to America.

Across the small number of missions included in the two new story chapters, you’ll come to learn that Salieri is very much just out for himself, getting you involved in jobs that don’t go to plan. But at least that means that the two or so hours you’ll spend making your way through Man of Honor’s story content is eventful.

By the time you’re watching the credits roll, you’ll have done plenty of sneaking around and engaging enemies in tense firefights, and there are some car chases and more thrown in for good measure. There’s a surprising lack of is knife fights, but I’ll leave you to decide if that’s a good thing or not. I didn’t mind them in the main game, but they were never all that exciting.

While it won’t take you long to play through Man of Honor, the fact that it’s easily accessible from the game’s main menu means you might revisit it at some point. But what will likely be more attractive to some is the fact that it also adds fresh new content to Free Ride mode.

New items such as weapons and charms freshen up the gameplay a little, and Salieri himself has both jobs and challenges for you to undertake, offering hours of additional gameplay if you’re a fan of the extra open world mode. Throw in new discoverables and achievements, and you have a decent expansion considering it costs just £8.99/$9.99.

It doesn’t add much to the game’s story, then, but if you’ve completed Mafia: The Old Country you’ll understand why that’s a hard thing to do. What Man of Honor does do, however, is offer another glimpse into the life of Enzo Favara, as well as that of Ennio Salieri, exposing more of their character. That might be enough for some, but it’s those who enjoy spending time in Free Ride mode that will get the most out of this expansion.

Mafia: The Old Country – Man of Honor is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
